This is incredible. Pilot is literally the GOAT of MPs, and there's not a single post in here?
Pentel = ask me how I know you're from the western hemisphere
The last thing we need is another person trying to collect pentels... so I'm going to admire your pilots and preserve my bank balance and happily chip away at my little pentel niche. And welcome.
I don't understand collecting only one manufacturer, but lots of people seem to be into that with Pentel
A lot has to do with early impressions.
They certainly started it for me, but as I see others, I grow to want more.
Somehow, I ended up with a red Ohto Grip 500 in high school
Probably responsible for the double-knock obsession, but it was necessary at the time because I had to wear a shirt and tie to school every day, and normal MPs would poke holes in my shirts
I went through a recent expansion based on reddit posts but I decided it was a rabbit hole and my real interest is my old favourite the pd345. I never carried pencils in my shirt pocket... pencil cases all the way!
I actually used one in May for the first time in years and was like, dammit, this is about as comfortable as a pencil can be
Don't worry, all 3 of mine were incidental in larger lots
Yeah I refuse to touch the rubber grip ones
rubber is great until it falls apart (or shifts on the barrel)
but I don't consider rubber-gripped pencils to really be collection-caliber
Since @Pearsonified has declared Pilot as the king of mechanical pencils here are a couple of my Maria's. I don't see anyone with these. 😉
This is really getting into the ephemera, but Pilot had different releases in different parts of the world
I think their SE Asia operation was run out of Thailand, and apparently, the market was quite thirsty for what I call executive model pencis
These are MPs with "fancy" styling—clearly not for drafting, but also clearly more sophisticated than basic offerings
Some of these pencils have an encircled "KK" insignia, but I have no idea what that might mean
eBay seller PAstel Cactus Cafe (I think?) is located in Thailand and has significant stock of these SE Asian Pilots
*Thread Reply:* I believe that's who I got the Maria's from. I look at those Pilots all the time just haven't pulled many triggers.
one of my favorite non-Japanese-release Pilots is the KK Sharp Pencil with woodgrain grip section. It's a super heavy, super sturdy pencil that feels substantial and elite
So I just checked the Toolbox—it's an encircled "K" insignia
This may mean it was made in Korea, but as far as I can tell, most of these Korean-made Pilots went straight to SE Asian markets
Your Marias are quite photogenic and do indeed appear ot have the "K insignia
Pilot made all sorts of Clutch Point models in the 80s and 90s, but this particular style is probably my favorite: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m30044797551
The [color base + gold accents] style exists in at least 2 versions: black + gold and burgundy + gold. I was fortunate to score a burgundy specimen for 888¥ on Mercari in November 2021
^ someone has a spreadsheet of all purchases. Lol
I gotta do that to reconcile shipments and ensure I've received everything lol
Shipping occurs in 2 parts: Domestic and International
Domestic = price from seller to Buyee Warehouse in Tokyo
But thought I was being too ocd if I kept track separately
International = price from Buyee Warehouse to me (one consolidated package)
My international package costs have ranged between 4500¥ and 9700¥ (something lame happened in NOvember, and prices were insane)
On roughly 50 orders, my domestic shipping charges tend to be 10,000¥–12,000¥
So typically, total shipping on 50 individual purchases runs from 14,500¥ to 21,000¥
Brutal, obviously, but there's no other way to get this sh**t if you live in America 🤷♀️:skintone5:
So basically, shipping tends to cost $3-$4 per package
Combined with the individual item purchase fee from Buyee, you're looking at $8-$9 per package
I got hit with an overcharge for storing too long last year. Wow
Which is why you REALLY want to buy "lots" or groups of pencils at once
Check out the insane price on this scratched-up Young Pilot double knock:
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h1030207087
This will be my last Japanese shipment for a while, so I was trying to collect the best stuff, regardless of price
now, when I have the chance to get something super rare that I really want, I know I've got to pull the trigger
Japanese high schoolers (literally) spending everything they've got on sought-after pieces
well JFC, you picked out one of the most insane pieces of all
If you asked me a year ago, I would have said that was the number 1 thing I wanted to collect
but then I discovered vintage executive pencils and never looked back
Can't believe I'm sharing this, but someone should buy this lot for the Pilot H-584 alone. Bonus that it comes iwth a Graph600 0.3, Tombow Zoom, Staedtler all black, 4 Pentel Smashes, and a black Uni Shift
Pilot H-584 is absolute unobtanium—this is the third one I've seen for sale in the past year
I'm quite literally the best pencil buyer on earth right now
If anyone has a mint condition H-585 they'd be willing to sell me, I'm likely to overpay because i just got f**cked on YAJ
seller sent piece of shit pencils instead of the ones I bought
fuck no, Buyee is already expensive enough as it is
yea same. I've been waiting to get burned
I always like to joke—the WORST packaging I've received from Japan has been better and shows more signs of care than the BEST packages I've received from eBay
*Thread Reply:* That really sucks. My colleague tried FromJapan and has completely switched over, coz his addiction is pricier: niche Japanese fashion. He got played out once by a seller who packed a fake, but FJ helped him with a full refund while they sorted things out with the seller.
*Thread Reply:* I'm gonna have to give someone else a shot. Buyee doesn't care that I've spent a few grand on their fees; they still hold me to "you didn't pay 3 extra dollars for us to lift a finger."
They actually told me they would not give a seller a bad rating for packing the wrong product, as they might receive a reciprocal bad rating and thus jeopardize their business. F**ck them.
The universe does not want me to have an H-585 that's in great condition
Buyee are grade-A dicks if you bring up any of this stuff
"Sorry we can't do shit and won't lift a finger for you"
"even though you've paid us over $2000 and are a whale client"
I told them to at least ding this seller to add a +1 to the "bad" rating
Anyway, here’s a trio of Pilot Holder HH-80R. The color rings don't seem to correspond to specific lead widths; I've seen each color for either 0.3 or 0.5. Still missing the rarest one, the 2mm Holder itself.
These are amazing! I have the red ring and tried to purchase a yellow one, but something was going on with the Mercari seller
Anyway, these are one of many holy grails from Pilot's history
Pilot also has some curious anomalies along the way: • These HH-80Rs have knurled grips (that later became the Staedter-style) and a tip style you won't find on any other Pilots • During this same era, Pilot released triangular-barreled drafting pencils in burgundy and black—super rare, super comfy, super cool
Do you mean that Staedtler Marsmicro 770 series? I'm trying to picture the triangular Pilots but drawing a blank :D
I lucked into the two shown in these pictures, but they are absolutely tremendous: https://preview.redd.it/kiycfalf43071.jpg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=1c97081d6bd73056aa12277da1d4d0b9d28c88ee
Ohhhh those! okok. Very interesting for Pilot 👍:skintone2:
I'm about to buy this stupid Mercari lot for 34,444 just to get one
Apparently there's a black version of the Pilot H-56X series? I've never seen one before, but this 0.3 certainly carries a different colorway than the typical blue:
Has anyone seen this item or tried to buy this Automac before? Looks like it’s been listed for a while with a lot of comments, and seems like it should be more than $25. Probably going to get cancelled, but I submitted to Buyee: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m84558169822
My storage period has expired, so I won't be able to get this 😔
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u1032646365
I won the internet today: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m15102118366
Looks like the Mercari shipper realized he could have sold for more and is not going to deliver the goods. Shame that Buyee doesn't have your back in situations like this. If you try this crap on eBay, you can get banned
It's the biggest problem with Mercari… this seller-first policy.
welp https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d1033716483
And then we could hire a few Japanese high schoolers to scour all the little stationery shops for their dead stock 😂
I know you know the Twitter guys—Akira, PG1000, etc
I've become immune - gotta learn to appreciate what you do have.
Facts! Most of the pencils that have delighted me the most were acquired for under 3000¥.
Well I certainly didn't see this price coming—I didn't even bid! https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c1033549569
I'm having to create some product documentation this week and I've been spending a good bit of time sketching and drafting it out on paper and I chose the Fuse Fuse 2020 as my weapon. I gotta say, it's damn nice using a shaker.
Why do we never see Pilot H-515 pencils for sale in Japan?
I see them in the US from time to time, but the prices are annoyingly high. Generally, with pieces like this, you can scoop them up in Japan for half price or so, but the H-515 is extremely scarce on that side of the big pond
I think they sold them at Walmart when we were kids.
You don't really ever see any PD345s on Japan sites. I guess it's because it was mostly a USA product.
*Thread Reply:* you better be dropletting your faucets with this blizzard here in Austin. 🤦♂️
*Thread Reply:* good thing they cancelled school, it's a BLIZZARD
That's a good point, though I definitely see some PD345s from time to time
Not sure why, but I was biased against teh PD345 as a kid
Got one in a lot last May, and I was like, hot DAMN this feels good!
some yeah but not a lot. You'll bee more PD335 than PD345
Did it have the rubber grip when you were a kid?
I don't recall; whatever I saw had to be the cheapest version
Get a yellow transparent PD345. You'll never be the same.
*Thread Reply:* When I was a kid I would get the smoke grey and the blue Quicker Clickers from my local Walmart. One day I saw a yellow one at a university bookstore and I flipped out. I bought one and was SO excited. I peeled off the price label and then used rubbing alcohol to remove the residue. The alcohol ate at the barrel and made it all cloudy. I was devastated. Then not long after that I lost it.
*Thread Reply:* This was the event that started a problem 🙂
*Thread Reply:* You hit that TM character pretty damn fast
*Thread Reply:* I also like the way you use em dashes
*Thread Reply:* oh word, I am an insufferable typography nerd
*Thread Reply:* em dashes for verbal pauses, en dashes for numbers (1980–1990)
Bought this lot just so I could add the yellow to my collection: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/1034587165
*Thread Reply:* I was eyeing this lot but I didn't have the appetite and space to handle the spares. I've only got the yellow so far. Let me know if you have a good spare green that you would sell? :-)
*Thread Reply:* I'll have 2 spares soon 😁
*Thread Reply:* Absolutely happy to hook up anyone here with items they want to fill out the collection!
Also nailed this sniper bid by $1; now I've got 4 colors of these: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k1034581842
chartreuse, orange/red, yellow/orange, and turquoise
Super basic mod here, obviously, but still chuffed over my new S15 0.4mm 💪:skintone6:👀 https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/pilot-s15-04-1.jpg https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/pilot-s15-04-2.jpg https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/pilot-s15-04-3.jpg
The only real bummer about this sort of mod is that you end up with a useless S10; if you could get the S20 grip sleeve over the plastic internals of the S10, you'd have an odd but semi interesting S12.5, lol
Nice! I tried this with my light brown 0.5 for a while before reverting them back to OG. The ‘leftovers’ bothered me way more than my graveyard of spare Dr Grip parts.
Kinda like how homey swapped the grip/barrel on these S20s: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m38712513505
The mechanical pencil I've owned the longest… Pilot H-227. I remember spotting it one day, around 1991-2, amongst its colorful brethren in the local stationery store and consciously picking out the clear bodied model in 0.7mm. Purely because the simple, functional mechanicals were made visible to my teenage eyes. Quite possibly my first non-0.5mm pencil too. Still have it, although there are small cracks near the clip and knock. Will probably never trade or sell… or replace.
Somebody needs to jump on this: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m48506423021
Absolutely infuriating: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m57947388047
Best price ever; the idiot seller just gave in and discounted for a commenter
Holy smokes, this was the deal of 2021: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m19089009927
Grumble... https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u1036742954
*Thread Reply:* Heh, I ended up getting another one of these at a better price 💪:skintone6:
Like, I know each version of the S20 and S30 will be collectible in the future, but I can't bring myself to get them
Assuming shipping goes normally, a Pilot Sprinter with water droplet tip and printing mostly intact is now the most expensive pencil I've purchased 😳
*Thread Reply:* $250 is the most you've spent on a single pencil?
*Thread Reply:* I haven't spent that....... yet I suppose
*Thread Reply:* I figured with all the pieces you have you would have spent more than that by far
*Thread Reply:* I spent just shy of $300 on a lot of 5 "pencils" that included a Pilot H-2105, a Tombow Monotech 500 0.3, a Pentel PA5, an etched stainless Mitsubishi Jaguar, and a Pilot Grandee Priere...
*Thread Reply:* But the last 2 ended up being ballpoint pens, so that kinda screwed the pooch
*Thread Reply:* So in effect, that H-2105 became my most expensive pencil. But now that distinction belongs to the Sprinter
*Thread Reply:* tbh I don't think I've spent over $100 on a single pencil before this transaction
*Thread Reply:* I spent $95 on a Rotring Newman
*Thread Reply:* The Fotring Newman is what the guy wearing the trench coat in NYC is selling on the streets.
I already have one, but it's still tempting 😂 https://jp.mercari.com/item/m48506423021
Can’t wait for these! https://jp.mercari.com/item/m89449346698
*Thread Reply:* Oh. Looked like it was only available in Japan.
*Thread Reply:* I’ve had so many of these cancel on me lately I was surprised when it actually shipped.
*Thread Reply:* Yeah those are awesome.
*Thread Reply:* I always have a hard time deciding whether or not to keep pieces like this in their box
*Thread Reply:* I absolutely LOVE getting the packaging but I find myself wanting them in my regular storage cases with the other related pieces.
*Thread Reply:* I do too, but will definitely take them out for display and the boxes go in a container.
*Thread Reply:* With a note inside if needed to help remember what goes in it!
Insane deal: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m14797567657
*Thread Reply:* Those are nice looking–what is the grip?
*Thread Reply:* H-1083/5 are top-tier vintage drafting pencils
*Thread Reply:* great combination of aesthetics and usability
Anyone happen to know the model number for this Pilot? It's been ‘Checkered Grip’ in my DB for the longest time. Pic from Ray Lau…
No clue—"checkered etched grip" is how I refer to it
Here's a stainless etched Pilot with blue inlays https://www.ebay.com/itm/334350221924?hash=item4dd8d38264:g:~8QAAOSw-3lhqFsd
And here it is in red https://www.ebay.com/itm/334350166654?hash=item4dd8d2aa7e:g:X3cAAOSwrD5gaYzG
These ornate engraved designs are definitely an acquired taste!
If anyone wants to snag this, I will happily buy the black mid-century dot and red pencils off you: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/o1046623484
*Thread Reply:* I think this is only the second time I've ever seen a Pilot H-235 for sale, and this is the first time I've seen red. I think these pencils were the lower-end drafting models in the 1980s, available at the same time as the H-108X and H-208X models.
*Thread Reply:* Now that you've said that you'll see a dozen by May
*Thread Reply:* The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon is questionably present in this hobby of ours lately.
*Thread Reply:* That dot and red Pilot would be the only reason I might consider making a bid 😂
*Thread Reply:* lol, well, if I had that black one, I would officially have TWO full sets of these mid-century dot (6 colors)
*Thread Reply:* The black drafting pencil on the left is pretty rare as well, thanks to the tip style
Damn. https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r1047648279
Does anyone know the name or code for this Pilot. It has flat body end sides and is slightly narrower and shorter than an ML5.
*Thread Reply:* I think @Pearsonified brought some of these to lunch the other day. He may know.
*Thread Reply:* I did bring a few of these—and I don't know the model numbers.
I call them "angle cuts with water droplet tips," as those features help identify these pencils among the rest of the Pilot catalog
*Thread Reply:* Any Pilot executives with the angle cut also have flattened sides near the top of the barrel.
This body mould was used on at least 3 different types of Pilot executives, and each one features a ring joint with a small stepdown between barrel and grip:
• Water droplet tip (color grip + aluminum barrel) • Grooved tip with 2mm sleeve (color grip + aluminum barrel) • Plastic barrel and grip with 2mm sleeve (mono-color)
*Thread Reply:* My favorite specimen is the one shown here with the water droplet tip; I find these to be among the most elegant and delightful executives from any manufacturer
*Thread Reply:* I only have black, white, red, and blue, and I'm honestly not sure if any other versions were ever produced. Based on other series, there could well be turquoise and orange variants out in the wild, too, but I've never seen them
*Thread Reply:* Ok, thanks (I call this one "flat sides")
Pilot H-300X models have all but dried up. Almost nothing available now compared to a year ago. (and please don't mention eBay—$400 is fishing and not actually selling)
I've rarely—if ever—seen anyone comment on this, but the European releases of the Pilot H-56X series were different from the Japanese releases in two key areas
A CLEAR EPIC
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/s1049389373
hello, I ask about the price to be paid for a new H1005 or H1003? On ebay the price is $100 fair, is it a good price? Does anyone of you have one for sale? thanks
*Thread Reply:* $100 is a decent price for a specimen in good condition...on eBay
If you have access to Yahoo! Auctions Japan or Mercari, you should be able to find both a 1005 and 1003 for roughly ¥7500 apiece
*Thread Reply:* https://www.ebay.com/itm/115369575395
Going to try for this H229 and the 0.7 and 0.3…
*Thread Reply:* I don't know anything about the Pilot H229 but I currently have one for sale.
*Thread Reply:* Hey, thank you for the heads up but I've already committed the bids…
This is an incredible deal on the Pilot 2020 ST and Slim specimens: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m45318055727
*Thread Reply:* If you look at the items this seller has sold on Mercari—and the prices specifically—you'll get weak in the knees
Hola, reference price for 3 NOS H315 (the old model of course) Thank you.
*Thread Reply:* Well, they are already bought: $65 for all three (red, green and orange)
*Thread Reply:* OMG, I need these! Best deal ever.
*Thread Reply:* Off topic on: I asked the seller if he would give me a discount for both. This month I'm almost broke, but I think I'll buy both, discount or not. I would keep the black one and sell the other one. The thing is that they are selling them in Venezuela (where I am from) and I am going to buy them through a friend, who is already saving some metallic Tikky that she bought for me. My sister is going to Vzla in a couple of months and she will do me the favor of taking them to Perú from where she will send them by mail to Chile (the Vzla postal service is very bad). Did you see the H515 for $60? But this month I can't really.
*Thread Reply:* H-515 has been going for $70-$105, so that's an OK deal. But those Sprinters don't go for less than $120—each one is an unbelievable deal
*Thread Reply:* My friend already has the pencils, they are bought, but something happened. The black pencil is fine, but the red one has a broken plastic ring (under the cap). At the time of making the delivery, the seller told my friend what was happening and proposed the following two options. Give him another pencil for free that has the same breakage problem: three pencils, one good and two broken. Or change the broken pencil for "another model that he have for sale" (at this moment I don't know what model it is, it's about to inform me). Is it worth buying these broken Sprinters?
*Thread Reply:* Tough to say, but if they work and have all the parts, it's probably worthwhile.
*Thread Reply:* They are like this. I'm still looking at the guy's page and he has several others whose collectible value I don't know, but they look very interesting. Let's see which one he wants to offer. When I know, I'll contact you please.
*Thread Reply:* Two broken sprinter or one of these?
*Thread Reply:* To me, the Sprinter is in a completely different class of pencil. But I would probably shy away from getting one that has broken components. Perhaps if it's only a cracked upper ring (and assuming the lead advance works perfectly), it might be worthwhile
This is a stellar deal: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f1060347305
The Murex pencils (top two, MR and YR) are of the highest quality, on par with Pentel's Excalibur series. The etched Elite is also an exquisite pencil. The "executive boardroom" pen-style pencil with gold accents is also quite nice, but I just don't put it in the same tier as the other 3. And for ¥9000—which I think will go unchallenged—this is a tremendous deal.
Here's my pricing for each pencil:
• MR: 3200 • YR: 3800 • Elite: 3600 • Boardroom: 1750 Total: 12,350 (not including fees or shipping)
