Does anyone know the model numbers for the Pentel Crew and Rush On Goal (ROG) pencils? The ones in my collection have date codes printed on the lead reservoirs between 1977 and 1979. It is interesting to note that there are quite a few similarities between these pencils and the PSx5 pencils. The tips are mostly interchangeable. The PSx5 tips leave a small gap on between the tip and the body on the Crew bodies. The ROG and PSx5 pencils are interchangeable. These are all nice pencils with light weight full metal bodies, brass clutches, and attractive styling.
*Thread Reply:* I was just looking through some stuff I had downloaded off Japanese Wikipedia and found mentioned that this is a P575. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%BA%E3%82%93%E3%81%A6%E3%82%8B
*Thread Reply:* I also found another image with a Green Crew of the same style as the Blue and Black in your photos.
*Thread Reply:* Looking back at that Wikipedia article and George's collection, Wikipedia says there are 3 colors, but George has 4 (Green, Black, Red & Blue.
*Thread Reply:* Is that a PS35 in your picture with the 2 Crew and a ROG?
*Thread Reply:* Yes it is a PS35 in the pictures with the Crew pencils.
*Thread Reply:* That page has some good stuff. I am going to have to study it carefully.
I have 5 Rush On Goal pencils, and also would like to know the model numbers. I have not seen nor heard of the Crew pencils before.
@George Fox has a full set of the crew pencils but I don't see them come up very often. Just based on the stickers they are likely Japan-only models. Maybe they were a tie-in for something.
Ah, yes, I found that post on his blog. I have that pencil on the right, but I don't recognize the pencil next to it, with the different tip.
The one on the right, I have with that color scheme (red on silver), plus I have red on black and blue on black. Plus I have 2 that say Rush On Goal at a diagonal across the middle of the pencil in silver on blue and silver (chrome) on silver (frosted).
I have also seen 3 other variants of the ROG.
The one next to the ROG is a PS35 (US79 and US80 catalogs). The PSx5 pencils have grooved grips and are pretty nice to write with.
*Thread Reply:* I've tried changing refills for this one. Let me dig it up when I get home and take some pictures. IIRC the real challenge is finding a suitable modern refill with a slim enough tip to fit through the cone.
*Thread Reply:* Thanks! I have a few of these now and another on the way. The ones I have are all pencil/pens with black releases. But there are some with one red and one black release. I wonder if that was supposed to have a red pen and a pencil or maybe a red pen and a black pen. There is not much on these online.
It is a Platinum double action. It has a ballpoint pen and a .5mm pencil. They are side by side so the cross section is rectangular.
@Ray posted about some of these on reddit last year. Unfortunately Platinum used the Double Action name for more run of the mill multi-pens. This one is truly an odd-ball. The clip is extra wide, The tips are retractable so it is pocket safe.

Can anyone identify this pencil? The only marking on it is this faded, serif "F" in the middle ring (seen in the second image below)
It's got a Givenchy-style short push cap and brass internals. Lots of heft makes me feel like this thing was probably 1500¥ or 2000¥ at retail whenever it was available. I've just not seen the "F" before and don't know which manufacturer it might indicate!

*Thread Reply:* I have a couple dozen of saved searches. I don't rely on my phone or email letting me know that there are new items for those results. I check my phone to see if there are any little blue dots next to those saved searches. I also check for "mechanical pencil lot" almost daily looking for very particular pieces like the PD325. It's amazing how fast I can scroll through photos looking for things that interest me.
*Thread Reply:* Same here. I have a bunch of searches saved with newest showing at top. Scan through quickly.
*Thread Reply:* I also have a few JP Yahoo Auction searches saved as well.
@Pearsonified Can you give us a run down of when you use barkeepers friend, how you use it, and worse case scenario/oopsies?
*Thread Reply:* Sure thing:
• I pour some BKF powder in a small bowl and then add water • I dab a Q-tip in the water and rub it around with the intent of getting BKF powder on the cotton to increase abrasiveness and promote the application of oxalic acid to the pencil surface • Vigorously scrub plating, aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic...but AVOID scrubbing "gold" parts, as the cheap gold plating will just fade away under too much friction • Unless pitting is EXTREMELY bad, you can remove nearly all of it with enough elbow grease. I've had a couple of rehab jobs that are just mind-blowing. • Body knock behavior can often be restored simply by cleaning dirty/corroded parts (even plastic)
*Thread Reply:* I've encountered some plastic polish in the past that would certainly restore barrel/grip shine at the cost of a small amount of material. I haven't tried this on any pencils yet, though, as the removal of anything other than rust or stray marks kinda...rubs me the wrong way lol
*Thread Reply:* Also with the BKF, I wipe the pencil constantly with a paper towel to avoid having moisture seep into the barrel, clutch, etc
*Thread Reply:* Initially, I thought it would be a good idea to let caps and tips soak in the BKF bath, but this turned out to be totally ineffective
*Thread Reply:* you're better off just scrubbing the shit out of tips, clips, and caps
*Thread Reply:* My only "oopsies" so far have involved cheaper, gold "plated" pencils (like Morisons)
*Thread Reply:* They simply couldn't stand up to any BKF, and I stipped the tips back to chrome
*Thread Reply:* Other than that, I'd say BKF has been incredibly forgiving, and I don't really worry about screwing up pencils
*Thread Reply:* I havne't had any silkscreening get removed inadvertently
*Thread Reply:* Awesome. Thank you! I'm going to add a link to this in the topic for this channel.
*Thread Reply:* Any before and after photos?
*Thread Reply:* Do you have any before/after photos?
*Thread Reply:* These pictures suck and don't really illustrate the impact of BKF: https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/oi7ihf/before_and_after_using_bar_keepers_friend_to/
*Thread Reply:* @Pearsonified I just cleaned two oldies with BKR. Very pleasing results, so thanks very much for your information.
*Thread Reply:* Might have to try this BKF on one of my pd505 clips with very small spots. Seems like the right application from your description above.
*Thread Reply:* Impressive! It's SUPER gratifying to clean up corroded clips and rusty spots
*Thread Reply:* I do NOT know the model, but I do know it also exists in green
Does anyone know how to request multiple items from a Mercari listing that states…
“Price is for one ** Please contact us if you would like more than one. We will give you a discount together with the ones that are listed separately.”
Trouble is that if you go thru Buyee they don't / can't help with consolidating multiple purchases from 1 seller.
If you buy from such a listing, you have to pay attention to your email as Buyee will contact you to confirm the choice/quantity. Maybe that's when you get a chance.
Yeah I've had buyee email me when a listing requires you to select a model/color but this particular listing I'm looking at would just go through as one order. Oh well.
Fixing a double knock:
I got a Mitsubishi W-knock in excellent condition, but I immediately noticed 2 things:
• The tip protruded too far when the first knock was fully engaged, and • The first knock was janky—the spring felt tight and the tip did not want to lock into place (had to try it a few times) I disassembled the pencil to check the most likely culprits—first, a partially unscrewed lead sleeve section, and second, residue or other nonsense on the top spring, which handles the initial knock.
No problems with either of these, tho...
Next, I inspected the inside of the barrel, which contains plastic ridges that are used to "catch" the plastic plunger for the initial knock. Everything looks ok in there, but even a small plastic chip could compromise the basic behavior.
At this point, I'm not sure what else to do or how I might fix this issue. It doesn't seem like anything glaring is amiss, but the knock behavior just...sucks.
Any ideas?
Got some pix? I can try to compare to mine and see if I spot the problem.
No pix, but I did notice the following while messing with this pencil last night:
If I complete the first knock, then unscrew the tip section, I can grab the nib and twist it clockwise. This causes the plastic knock "grabber" piece to fit together better, and then the nib retracts a tiny bit to its proper knocked position
Unfortunately, I have to do this every time to get the upper plastic knock grabber to sit right. It seems the interior mechanism rotates slightly on the first knock, and this rotation is what causes it to be "off"
not really sure how I can counteract this, or more precisely, WHERE I would need to add something inside the barrel to counteract the little rotational shift that is throwing the whole thing off
🤔 The rotation is probably part of the double knock action as it locks into place… Perhaps the least harm is to apply something like teflon lubricant to points of contact with the body.
I may try that. Just now getting into some pencil mods, which is forcing me to add extras like teflon lubricant 💯
