I'm trying to make a catalog of all of the pencils produced by Pentel
You will know. I'm not too shy about asking for information
@Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) has joined the channel
@Knocktype11 I have put together a spreadsheet of all the pencils in all of the catalogs, so I can add it to my pencil database. It may be a little bit behind, as I don't think I have added the 2020 or 2021 catalogs, but I believe I have all of the other catalogs (I own) in there.
*Thread Reply:* Lucky for you all of your pencils have the same dimensions 😉
*Thread Reply:* Way cool! Can you share this spreadsheet? I've been working on a similar project but trying to get even the ones not in the catalogs. I'm also including some interesting dimensions as well.
*Thread Reply:* There may be a few pencils missed that are not in obvious sections, but here is what I have.
*Thread Reply:* @First-Sail check out the link in the topic on the #pentel channel.

*Thread Reply:* Please don't share this link outside of this group.
I know that there are some pencils that are not in any of the catalogs I own, for example, PG2. I know it was out during the 80's, but it was never in any of the US catalogs, and I only have 1 partial Japanese catalog from that time period.
I am aware of a large number of pencils that fit that category. Proof of existence may be all we can hope for. The painful ones are the ones without any model numbers on the pencils themselves.
Yes, I have a couple of those that I have not been able to identify.
Here is a list of all of the PDF catalogs I own. I only physically own the 1979 Pencil of America catalog. I was bidding for a second copy of this (but lost it today), so I could get the Price List that was being sold with it.

Found something interesting on the internet archive when looking for JIS S 6013. (I didn't find it but this is kind of interesting.) https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.iso.9177.1.1989/page/n7/mode/2up
Also https://archive.org/details/gov.in.is.iso.9177.2.1989 and
Happy Thanksgiving all! Nice quiet day here in Texas. Gobble gobble.
*Thread Reply:* Happy Thanksgiving to you too! This place is one of the things I am thankful for this year.
This is the kind of thing we need for the different pencil brands
To all of my friends @here: Nollaig Shona, Merry Christmas, Happy Winter Solstace, and Happy Holidays! This has been a fun and interesting experiment. I am happy you all are here.
I also want to echo what Mr Knocky said. Thanks to you all for being here! Looking forward to growing membership next year for more knowledge sharing and fun times!
If you know someone who collects let us know and we can invite them in.
Agreed! We should also get some of our inactive/previous members re-engaged.
Does anyone know where you can get clear pen/pencil bags? The ones I am looking for are about 1" x 6" clear bags.
Happy New Year everyone! Thanks for joining us here and contributing to the hobby and the knowledge sharing.
Happy collecting in 2022! I'm wanting to add more displays and advertising pieces to my collection this coming year.
Happy new year all! Looking forward to getting everything measured and cataloged this year.

You'll see that I added an icon/logo to this Slack workspace. This makes it easier to switch back and forth from other workspaces for those of us who use Slack for work and other groups.
Whattup homies, finally gave into the inevitable time suck this will create 😁
To avoid the time suck just remove yourself from the #pentel channel
I'm kind of still figuring out what to post. Truth is, I’m a real quiet person, so that's why I don't say much - just usually post on Twitter and include some info wherever I can. Plus, the majority of the pen/pencil community on Twitter seem to be Japanese, so convos are sort of limited.
Then on FB, I was invited to a Taiwanese MP collectors group - despite my Chinese ethnicity, my first language is English as I grew up in Singapore. So my postings there are also somewhat limited - the differences between Taiwanese traditional chinese and modern simplified chinese (which I learned at school) make convos more difficult than expected. I often can't catch the localised lingo… so once again, it's mostly about sharing pix of my current combo of the week or sometimes just a milestone acquisition or two.
Reddit was a recent thing for me - I'm just getting a hang of the tonality and content that's preferred in the r/pens and r/mechanicalpencils communities. English makes it easier to talk and that's a blessing.
Here, I'm in awe of the depth of knowledge being shared. I thought I was obsessive trying to trace the development of just the rOtring 500/600 designs but it's really small beans looking at the detective work in the Pentel thread 👍:skintone2:
Anyway, I’ll see if I can contribute around here and not just repost my stuff from other platforms.
*Thread Reply:* I've seen your posts on twitter and on reddit. They are always informative. Sometimes just a picture shows enough to lead me down new and unexpected paths.
If you know about the Rotring 500/600 designs I would be happy to know more about that. In general I've seen every picture and post about "joining the club" that I need, but seeing some history of the design could be very interesting.
No pressure. Share what you want. Your name will be invoked and you will be pulled into random conversations if someone thinks you have knowledge about a subject. Things are either really quiet or really busy here. I have found people to be very friendly and informative. Except when I ask for actual numbers and measurements. Most of the answers are: "I don't know because my calipers are out of batteries" or "I don't know because my x-ray machine is out of gas" or "I don't have a optical spectrometer" or other similar nonsense. Furrfu!
Repost your twitter stuff here please! I look at twitter sometimes but I am not on it.
*Thread Reply:* Also, use threads and follow Wheaton's law. You will fit right in.
*Thread Reply:* Hey @Kelvin Pang (drifand) 😀. Like @Knocktype11 said, there's no pressure or expectations here. This group started after I found myself having DMs and text messages with folks like Knocktype11, @Ƶ and other collectors I've gotten to know directly. Slack was a good and easy way to categorize conversation and not have 10 people on a group text message.
There's a bit of magic that happens here in helping each other find pieces, doing detective work, and sharing new discoveries.
We're glad to have you here. Again no pressure and feel free to leave any channel and mute the ones that are not of interest. As you've already noticed, the #pentel channel is very active and we sometimes get excited and have convos outside of topic threads.
Welcome to another week of collecting. 👋
*Thread Reply:* @Kelvin Pang (drifand) what these guys said buddy - no pressure and no worries.
I'm sure your contributions will be legendary! You've got one of the most formidable collections I'm aware of 🤙:skintone6:
I've opened 28 of 51 packages currently in my possession, AMA
Some packages I haven't yet opened in this shipment include:
• Pentel Injecto • Pilot Automac (all silver) • Pengel PG1505 late model • Faber-Castell automatic (green) • Tikky double-push white + yellow (and some other Tikky Specials) • Pentel PMG • Pilot Switch in black and gold • Kokuyo Campus Art TZ-5203 and TZ-5213 (0.3 and 0.5) • Mitsubishi M5-1006 • BOXY super red • Mitsubishi W-knock black + skeleton 😱 • rOtring 400 automatic gunmetal • rOtring 500 in new red, blue, and green colorways
I hadn't run into any issues until recently—my Staedtler 925 95 03 was in limbo, and then I hit the top end customs wall at 200,000¥
So I had to break up shipments to make each one come in under 200,000¥
https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/rotring-400-automatic-gunmetal-raw-1.jpg https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/rotring-400-automatic-gunmetal-raw-2.jpg https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/rotring-400-automatic-gunmetal-raw-3.jpg https://pearsonified.com/images/pencils/rotring-400-automatic-gunmetal-raw-4.jpg
The automatic mechanism sorta feels like lead cushioning, and the resulting effect is that the tip doesn't feel quite as sturdy as a fixed sleeve with typical push-to-operate mechanism
Also, the automatic mechanism doesn't quite cut it, IMO. I've used quite a few others that work more seamlessly. With this one, I have to press down on the paper harder than I ever would while writing, and then the lead will advance when I lift off the paper.
I don't really give a damn about automatic mechanisms in general, and I think they are a joke compared to a basic double knock
But there is no denying that the rOtring 400 in gunmetal is cool as shit—I have very few pencils that are more aesthetic than this one (if any)
In Slack, when you jot a note to yourself on your profile, can anyone else see it?
I have saved the Pentel Catalog Dropbox link in my notes in my profile. Can anyone else see it?
I would like to find a place where it can be pinned so I (or anyone on here) can just direct people to that link.
I get to the site, and my page just fine.
Anyone on here buying from Mercari WITHOUT using Buyee?
*Thread Reply:* I just recently signed up for two additional proxies to be able to buy things from Mercari when they are not on Buyee
*Thread Reply:* cuz missing that red PD1065 made me sad
*Thread Reply:* That's what I'm thinking—I want the Japan-only sales from Mercari
*Thread Reply:* I think about 40% of the good stuff is only available that way
*Thread Reply:* What other proxies support Mercari? It seems like them and Buyee have a partnership? Especially where they advertise Buyee on their website.
*Thread Reply:* I have accounts with Neokyo and Remambo
*Thread Reply:* Can you even create a Mercari account without a Japanese mobile number?
*Thread Reply:* My thought there was to ship to my Tenso address.
*Thread Reply:* You do deserve a new Nokia
This is an incredible website for exploring pictures of obscure vintage MPs:
New to Slack? Here is a quick introduction:

More fun you can have in slack: Ctrl+Return while typing a message adds a new line to a message without sending it. You can break things up without another message.
*Thread Reply:* I reached out to him last night
*Thread Reply:* What shipping from Buyee do you fellas usually choose?
*Thread Reply:* I have had only two shipments. I always pick the cheapest non-surface method.
*Thread Reply:* I have only had 1 shipment from them. Surprised me very much with the huge box. I like Zenmarkets packaging much better.
*Thread Reply:* ALwyas go with cheapest between EMS (or whatever the initials are) or Air
*Thread Reply:* I usually do EMS or DHL
*Thread Reply:* so what's in the packages? Candies and bubble gum?
*Thread Reply:* Sorry, work got in the way… meetings and other crapola. I’ll get some pics shortly
*Thread Reply:* I didn't realize they were a kind of a double side knock.
*Thread Reply:* Yea I like the Yoko2's as well. But I tend to like the cheaper plastic pencils 🙂
*Thread Reply:* Dude what is that white PD345!?
*Thread Reply:* the photo in the listing was trash
*Thread Reply:* The clip came off pretty easy, but it’s tight
*Thread Reply:* some wd-40 might rub that Mild Seven bs off 🙂
*Thread Reply:* yea some of them come off easily.
*Thread Reply:* I think this is the only other white PD I’ve ever seen https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/b8rx2b/pentel_quicker_clicker_pd345/
*Thread Reply:* Is reddit user wetlines a knockology member? That white one is so darn rare.
The white 335 above... you got me too!
*Thread Reply:* He's not but I talk with him. He's been real busy this past year but he's coming back up to the pen and pencil world.
I'll get him on sooner than later. 😃
Wow, this is pretty neat - a bunch of Japanese pencil related commercials from the late 70's - 80's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo-Lgz_Q6ak&t=361s
*Thread Reply:* Love this!
I'm still looking for the commercial my animation cell is from.
*Thread Reply:* I’ve only ever seen the rolling writer one
I just paid an import duty on a package from Buyee
*Thread Reply:* Interesting. What % did you get hit with?
*Thread Reply:* not sure about the %, but it was ~$75
*Thread Reply:* Our government recently did a deal with most of the large overseas online retailers so that they now charge our local 15% VAT/GST tax on all parcels they send to NZ. I forgot about that and so my package from Amazon Australia wasn't as big a saving over local as I thought. They don't show the tax, just bang it on when credit card processed
Knockology, huh? Seems right up my alley...
So I've got a bunch of pencils I'm disposing of. Nothing particularly rare or valuable, but perhaps there might be something of interest to some of you. This spreadsheet lists them. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ui91IbKlZYT8ypNewitMpZ1orTWbQ02ukH0zNow7gtU/edit?usp=sharing
*Thread Reply:* Curious about: • Berol TM-5 • Eberhard Faber EFAmatic • Sailor unknown 0.5 Very interested in: • Pentel Technica-X red • Pentel XS red
*Thread Reply:* What's your email? I'll take a couple of images and send. Or email me at [email protected]
*Thread Reply:* @Kiwi-d I'm interested in the Manufactum double knock…
Fun seeing my wife packing up for an international show and digging through her Tokyo Pen Shop pen bag for the perfect Japanese pens to take with her. 🕺:skintone2:
My wife was like, "what are all these pencils?!?"
And then she was like, "oooh, I like THAT one, can i have it?!?"
Yea my wife started off stealing my pencils but luckily the interest has waned over the years and she has become a wooden pencil person.
Well in big news for me, I just sold my Parker Duofold book for US$80, so that's a real weight off my shelf, and mind. Next my Conway Stewart book, #93 of limited edition of 100. Should have sold it way back when for $350 or something but now they release ebook and paperback reprint, so I'll probably only get $150 or so.
*Thread Reply:* So the ones for sale on Amazon for $500+ won't be selling at those prices?
*Thread Reply:* Well I suppose anything is possible. On eBay UK you can get them for under $100.
@Pearsonified Does your wife have any idea of the cost of your collection, or is it like yachts, where you see the label on the gear bag "If I die at sea, tell my wife I love her, and don't let her sell the boat for anything less than three times what I told her it cost."
I was thinking about selling off my Spoke 1 pencil, but can't find any old auctions or anything for a price guide. Has anyone got any ideas re pricing?
I sold one of my Spoke 1 pencils a couple of years ago for $60. It was a direct sale, not an auction.
I have a good bit of things I'd like to sell but every time I set some time aside to create some listings on eBay the fees give me pause.
I have one on my website. When I put stuff up on eBay, I mark it up over my website by about 1/3. The eBay fees for me tend to be about 15-18%, so I still make a little more there than on my website.
But setting up my website consists of running a PDF out of my database and posting it, whereas setting up eBay postings is much more tedious, so I only post sets on eBay, instead of individual items.
I pretty much have fallen into Jimmy's approach here
Definitely LIST on eBay, but make sure your prices on there will be worthwhile (for you) in the end
Once I finish two other projects I'm already working on, I'll add a pencil directory with sales listings to my personal website
And once I get my new database created and populated, I can start adding some of my extras, beyond the P200's.
How many storage days left do you let your Buyee items get to before you consolidate and ship?
I had a bunch at their last day when I started the consolidation.
It seems like you might have a chance to to get dinged though. I started the consolidation right away on day 1 and it was during the week.
For me it's a target cost because I want to keep the total below Singapore’s VAT limit for online purchases. Usually consolidate about 7 days before deadline.
and I keep buying thousand$ more because of the 1 or 2 leftovers from the previous batch
I think that I am going to try to place an order from Singapore via https://twotreeteam.com/ on Monday 2/14 (when they reopen). I have 6 items I am going to try to purchase. @sideKnocks (atxalais), I believe you said that there was something you wanted to get.
*Thread Reply:* https://www.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21531262756167
*Thread Reply:* Are prices listed in New Taiwan dollars or a different currency?
*Thread Reply:* And the SGP thing confuses me, as TwoTree is Taiwanese
*Thread Reply:* (I don't see anything SGP-specific on their site)
*Thread Reply:* I meant Taiwan, not Singapore
*Thread Reply:* Definitely interesting to see auctions from elsewhere
*Thread Reply:* Seems to me there are deals to be had
*Thread Reply:* @Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) willing to grab these velours for me?
*Thread Reply:* Found these on Mercari https://jp.mercari.com/item/m47348374318
*Thread Reply:* How does this keep happening? I miss listings all the time it seems. 😂
*Thread Reply:* Well, if you hadn't asked about the ones just above, then I wouldn't have known to point these out to you.
*Thread Reply:* Do you still want me to try to order the ones from Shopee? I am about to place my requests.
*Thread Reply:* For some reason, the pencils with velour gross me out
*Thread Reply:* The ridiculousness of it is the appeal. $5 says you have at least one in your collection one day.
*Thread Reply:* @Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) how did the attempt to order go?
*Thread Reply:* The pencils are on order and they will let me know when they are received. I do not have line detail to check status on the website, but we will see how this goes.
*Thread Reply:* Did any of the listings you purchased get marked as sold on the listing pages?
*Thread Reply:* Yes. Everything that was single items are now Sold Out, or Zero in stock.
*Thread Reply:* Sweetness! So you were able to get the SHARPentels and the Q355s for little ole me?
*Thread Reply:* It looks like it.

Want: Any catalog for Pilot or Mitsubishi prior to 1988
Want: Any catalog for Tombow, Newman, or Colleen
*Thread Reply:* Those are the only non-Pentel catalogs I have.
*Thread Reply:* Excellent, thank you! and I should have been more specific—I am interested in catalogs prior to 1990
*Thread Reply:* The closest thing I ‘have’ is a saved link to Tombow’s ‘Flight to 100’ microsite. Basically a chronological timeline covering major and minor milestones.
https://www.tombow.com/100th/chronicle.php
*Thread Reply:* Best viewed on desktop…
*Thread Reply:* Pretty cool! Didn't know the basic MP was called the Dragonfly Create; I have a few of these specimens and really like them—made in 1971!
*Thread Reply:* I've gone thru that site so many times and I'm never sure I've noted down everything that matters :D
*Thread Reply:* I like how they call out the rampant fakes in the 30's stealing their dragonfly
Also, I'm moving my office to a new location that will provide superior lighting for pictures. Sadly, the Toolbox™ won't make the trip, but I'll finally be able to take reasonable pictures of interesting pieces
On another note… I really need to sync up my dying Macbook Air to my super current iPhone. All these updates to catalogs and such need to be seen on a nice big screen!! All my saved scans and snippets of other catalogs are also on my MBA, so if I can't get Slack to run properly, it's a chore to share pix etc
Rant!!!! So irritating when a seller on Amazon etc describes the variants of the same pencil differently. For example Uni Shift M3-1010 and then same seller lists Uni Pipe Shift M4.1010 and Mitsubishi Pipe Lock M5 1010. So every version given a different name and the model number in different format. These people should be first against the wall when the revolution comes.
People out here behaving like morons to try and appease the search engine gods
Seems to me that if you are a collector of current production pencils, then the last 5 - 10 years have basically been just the same pencils released in an ever changing array of special edition and limited edition colours. No new pencils, just the same ones recycled over and over in new colourways. "Hey look, here's five new colours of Pentel Smash", "Wow Tombow Mono in four new pastel colours". I kind of feel I'm being played.
*Thread Reply:* This is unfair, but I regard anyone who collects "modern" pencils as a joke
*Thread Reply:* If you collect MPs, 1965–1995 are what matters, full top
The latest new pencils from Pentel were the Orenz in 2014, then the OrenzNero in 2017.
The limited edition playbook won't be going out of style anytime soon. The general public loves fun, funky and even weird colour ways… Pentel has released more new PENS in recent times… The latest Calme looks like a me-too candidate versus the Zebra bLen, Uni One-F etc.
I wonder how well is Zebra doing with its DelGuard line… the last big thing was the Marvel edition of the Lx pencils…
There seemed a bit of a burst of activity - Kuru Toga, Delgard, Orenz, etc... but ever since it's just been change the colour, change the grip, repeat.
And, hey, I like it too. Even with my expanded focus on Pentel pencils in general, my primary focus is still on the P200 variations that are coming out.
*Thread Reply:* Yes well I'm sure plenty of people like the endless variations. Nothing wrong with that at all. I guess I'm just bemoaning the lack of lots of new models versus the constant stream of new variations of existing pencils. New variations are obviously much cheaper than whole new models so I can't help but feel that as long as the variation gravy train keeps on rollin' that it limits the need to release actual new models.
I guess we can count the following as relatively new?
Pilot Dr Grip ACE - combining Mogulair with Dr Grip and throwing in a lead reserve ‘empty tank’ indicator.
Pilot S30… auto x bling
Uni Alpha Gel Switch - Locking out the Kurutoga engine for… what? 😂
Zebra had this series that allowed you to customise the grip using colorful tennis racquet grip rolls?
Zebra also had a clone of a KIN shaker pencil… which came in rubberized black with clear colour accents.
Zebra Sharbo Nu - the ability to refill a multipen mechanical pencil like a standard MP.
The Alpha Gel Switch is indeed interesting—I think Mitsubishi just thinks the presence of a Kuru Toga mechanism will boost sales for any pencil. I wish they were wrong about this, but as things stand, I don't see much reason for them to hop off this train any time soon
Which pencils constitute the Hi Mecha collection? I'll volunteer a few: • Pilot H-1003/5 • Pilot H-2003/5 • Pilot H-2013/5 • Pilot H-3003/5 • Pilot H-5005 (I know there are a couple of variants at this super high price point, but I'm not sure what distinguishes the models or if they carry different model numbers) • Pilot Automac • Pilot S30 • Pentel Technomatic + Excalibur variants • Pentel PSD5/PWP15 • Pentel Mechanica • Mitsubishi Hi-Uni 2050/3050/5050 + CARBO variants • Tombow Variable • Tombow SH-700W • Staedtler Micromatic • Faber-Castell TK-matic and TK-matic L • Kokuyo TZ-PSP3/5 (Fuji Corona released the same pencil with their badging) As far as I can tell, a pencil must have one of the following to be considered "Hi Mecha": • double knock • automatic feed • special advancement mechanism (Hi Uni 3050 + 5050, Tombow Variable) • special tip covering (Hi Uni series, Pentel Mechanica, Tombow Variable) Thoughts? Did I miss anything?
*Thread Reply:* Pentel PN305 QX Pentel Rolly's PC series
*Thread Reply:* • Pentel Technopress And though I balked initially, I think the PC25 does have what it takes to be considered Hi Mecha...but barely
*Thread Reply:* Probably heresy but by those criteria we should include the OHTO Super Pro-mecha, warts and all.
*Thread Reply:* And of you think of tip protection, then what about Platinum Z, Archi Y2, Pilot Protex…
*Thread Reply:* By ‘special lead advancement mechanism’ we could also include body knock models?
*Thread Reply:* How about Platinum HAYAAI 1000 Push Point-Matic?
*Thread Reply:* Platinum Z and Archi were definitely left out. Not sure the Pilot Protex is ubiquitous enough to warrant inclusion; I kinda put it in the same category as the Grandee Priere
*Thread Reply:* I'm just saying that those qualities are evocative of "Hi Mecha"
*Thread Reply:* I think there are plenty of pencils with those qualities that the larger collecting market doesn't really consider to be Hi Mecha
*Thread Reply:* The Ohtos are an interesting case; as far as I can tell, only the black versions of the Promecha series carry any weight on the resale scene (>¥5000)
*Thread Reply:* Automatic Feed would also include the Orenznero
*Thread Reply:* But I would not consider that Hi Mecha
*Thread Reply:* Ah yeah, I think the Orenznero qualifies for sure. Like the Pilot Automac and S30, it'll be sought after some day, even though that feels a little weird at this point
*Thread Reply:* How about the Pentel P154 Injecto?
*Thread Reply:* I cannot personally elevate a cartridge pencil to Hi Mecha status (I hate them)
*Thread Reply:* I do love the Injecto, though—only cartridge pencil I don't hate
Can we name all pencils with automatic mechanisms? • Staedtler Micromatic 777 • Staedtler Retromatic • Pilot Automac • Pilot Automac E500 • Pilot H-5005 • Pilot S30 • Pilot Actor • Pentel Orenznero • Pentel QX PN305 • Platinum Hayaai • Niji 700/Platinum Hayaai II • Mitsubishi A-Tech • Sakura AT-matic • Tombow Runner • Zebra Knockless • Zebra Nocty Can you think of any others?
*Thread Reply:* Of these, my favorite mechanisms are: Niji 700, Zebra Knockless, and the Staedtler Retromatic
*Thread Reply:* Likewise, I found the Automac, S30, and Orenznero mechanisms to be quite disappointing.
This could be due to the extremely steep angle at which I hold the pencil, but regardless, the other mechanisms listed above work much better for me.
*Thread Reply:* Faber-Castell alpha-matic and TK-matic?
*Thread Reply:* Boom, there's a couple right there. What's the difference between those two? Alpha matic has the conical tip, and the TK has the standard drafting sleeve?
*Thread Reply:* How would you know when a particular Pentel actually has an automatic lead advance system when they seem to excessively use the word Automatic in the catalogs (at least in ’79) and say things like the PD345 and P200 have a “Quick-Click automatic lead advance”??
*Thread Reply:* If you own every pencil, you can test them all and determine which ones actually mean "automatic lead advance" instead of "automatic pencil" (which typically means push-to-advance)
*Thread Reply:* Alternatively, if you want to throw the name of a pencil out there, I'll tell you if it's truly automatic or not 🤓
*Thread Reply:* Lol, I meant regular humans who wouldn’t have access to such a vast collective of all things MP! But seriously, what was the thinking because they use it to describe the whole MP section in 78.
*Thread Reply:* Are they just calling the MP in general and automatic pencil because you don’t have to sharpen it?
*Thread Reply:* And I know, with all things Pentel, who the hell knows.
*Thread Reply:* There are a couple of detailed posts about TK-matic and Alphamatic on Reddit. Generally accepted that TK cane first with metal lead retainer in the cone. Lead retainer was switched out for a rubber version when Alphamatic was introduced for ‘executive use’.
*Thread Reply:* That is a funny pencil - who came out with it originally?
*Thread Reply:* They’re mostly the same across the different brands with the exception of the eraser.
*Thread Reply:* Yes, they looks similar to pd15. They're automatic (auto feed), side knock, lead cushioning and made in Japan
*Thread Reply:* And cheap, but, they are in the other side of the world and the distributor do not ship my town
Two Tree Team Just thought I'd say that I placed and received an order by Two Tree in Taiwan. Excellent and fast communication.
*Thread Reply:* I received mine as well. The only thing I didn’t care for, is that you can’t see the status of your order. You place your order, then 2 weeks later they say it’s ready.
*Thread Reply:* Yes, their system is rather manual and offline... for a digital online company.
Is there anyone on here who has a Naver blog login and has access to the Cafe?

Does anyone have any contact information for Jeremy Ledford (pencils11)?
Never mind. I just found that he passed away in 2018.
Does anyone have contact infor for the owner of http://mechanicalpencilmuseum.blogspot.com?
*Thread Reply:* Wish I could say yes. There are some really good pictures there. Unfortunately it looks like it has not been updated since 2013.
*Thread Reply:* Not just back in 2013, but they loaded all of that in 1 week from 5/11/13 to 5/17/13, then nothing more.
Ok pros. How long does it take you to look at this listing to determine if there's anything in there you want?
*Thread Reply:* We've gained some super powers in browsing through listings haven't we?
*Thread Reply:* Less than two minutes looking at the first picture. If anything tickled my spider senses I might spend considerably more time.
At some point here you start to ask yourself "what am I going to do with the rest of the stuff?" Then you start to think "I could offer $X for that one and see how that goes". Then you think "I'll post it on slack and see if @Pearsonified reacts. Bwahaaaaa"
*Thread Reply:* I see nothing in that picture worth a damn
Not sure how I've never come across this blog before but lots of good info. http://www.stationeria.net/
What is a drafting pencil? Clearly there are pencils that seem obviously drafting pencils (Rotring 600). Then there are some which are obviously not drafting pencils (Pentel Kerry P1035). The only obvious feature that all drafting pencils need to have is a lead sleeve longer than 2mm. But not all pencils with longer lead sleeves were intended to be used for drafting (e.g. Pentel icy AL25 that has a 3mm lead sleeve)
Is the definition of a drafting pencil one that can be used in drafting or was marketed as a drafting pencil? There may be no answer to this question that will satisfy everyone. Show your work.
*Thread Reply:* This is too deep of a question for a Saturday night.
Shouldn't you be filling Easter baskets with robin’s eggs, Reese's, and Paper Mate SharpWriters?
*Thread Reply:* Maybe. We are not holding Easter at our house this year. The only downside of this is the loss of the chance to point at lemons sitting in the grass and fool unsuspecting children. Have we lost all of the small pleasures in life?
*Thread Reply:* Obviously, there are no hard and fast rules here, so there is a 0% chance everyone will be satisfied with where the lines are drawn.
But for me, it's pretty simple—and I think Pentel is probably the best manufacturer to illustrate how I see this:
*Thread Reply:* In the image above, the horizontally oriented pencils and all pencils in the row above that are drafting pencils
*Thread Reply:* I think they all have 4mm lead sleeves except for the PS315, which extends to a maximum of 5mm (and feels a mile long).
The only exception is the 2mm sleeve on the P225, which I categorize as a drafting pencil mostly out of convenience...
The styling is evocative of the P20X line, and the P225 certainly feels more "related" to the P20X and PS315 than, say, the Pentel 5 executive lineup.
And in terms of where it should sit within the collection, I think it only makes sense to place the P225 between the P20X and PS315.
So, while I would expect very little pushback about most of the aforementioned pencils being categorized as drafting models, I can certainly see a deeper discussion around particular specimens (like the P225).
But again—I think once you look at the fine details of certain pencils, you can identify the "closest genetic relationship" and use that as a guide for classification.
Finally, let's draw one last contrast between the drafting pencils and executives/hybrids.
In the above image, check out the second row of vertically-oriented pencils.
From left to right, I would categorize everything through the Smashes as a drafting pencil.
But everything from the P125 (Ceramicron) over to the right is either hybrid (Injecto), ballpoint-style (P125), or executive (everything else).
And in the top vertically-oriented row, I would classify all of those pencils as executive models.
*Thread Reply:* Hybrids = exhibit features of both drafting and executive models but cannot reasonably be pigeonholed into either label
*Thread Reply:* Executives = anything that looks like a basic Pentel 5
(For aspergers-y individuals like myself, if a pencil has a different material in the grip section—and this grip also includes texturing—it becomes a hybrid)
*Thread Reply:* Horizontally-oriented pencils = all executives
*Thread Reply:* The row above that? All drafting, but with a couple of models that could certainly be debated (H-315 and H-325 sliding sleeve—red, yellow, green, navy, and black pencils a few slots left of center)
*Thread Reply:* And damn near everything in the top 2 rows is either executive, hybrid, or ballpoint-style
*Thread Reply:* Well shit. I agree with everything Pearson said.
*Thread Reply:* How do you feel about having those supergrip shakers in that badass drawer?
*Thread Reply:* If the Pilot collection gets too large, those will be the first to go...but I am kinda fond of some of those cheapie 2020s for some reason 🤷♀️:skintone5:
*Thread Reply:* and lol, you touched on a sore topic—I get bummed when I have to relegate the ¥100 "knock pencils" to secondary storage, but that's almost certainly where the Pilots, Mitsubishis, and Zebras will end up 😔
*Thread Reply:* What does a ¥100 pencil look like?
Oh those must be the SharpWriters Knocky hands out.
*Thread Reply:* Check out my Pilot drawer image above; the 3 pencils in the upper left corner are knock pencils.
*Thread Reply:* Typically they have a long, plastic, hexagonal barrel that more or less mimics a traditional yellow pencil
*Thread Reply:* @Pearsonified thanks for the response. There is alot to think about there. Somehow I missed how you define a drafting pencil.
Follow up: is a Sharplet-2 a drafting pencil?
*Thread Reply:* If you draft with it, yes.
*Thread Reply:* No, a Sharplet is a cheap piece of shit 😁
Looks like the Chicago customs office has effectively shut down
Not like closed, per se, but no packages are getting through
Reading about horror stories of packages stopped since February
sometimes they just show up at my door
Japan Post sometimes has it stuck but it usually hits my Informed Delivery anyway
I have stopped sending items from Japan via EMS. I have been sending by DHL lately. It is faster and cheaper.
Lately my FedEx shipments have been getting stopped due to needing a Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) Certification. For Pencils?
I have had 2 of these stops this year.
*Thread Reply:* As far as I know, not directly. They say "international shipping," but it ends up meaning DHL
That is how I shipped with Buyee last time.
And, it was 2 day delivery to the US.
I just consolidated some items but no DHL as an option… what was the total weight of your last shipment?
EMS was definitely a big mistake. Now I understand that "International shipping" means DHL, and they have been more reliable by far. I think my f'd up shipment last year was freaking EMS.
My last package from Buyee looks like it weighed a little over 2 kg (2,270). On the paperwork, Delivery is listed as Buyee Air Delivery, which ended up being DHL.
I think Buyee uses DHL and ZenMarket uses FedEx.
*Thread Reply:* ZenMarket uses both FedEx and DHL plus surface, EMS, and ZenExpress. Prices and times are all over the place.
Hello, everybody down, nobody moves, I have a gun: put all the pencils in this bag.
Can you sell, buy or trade in this group? (sorry I didn't read the whole thread)
*Thread Reply:* Yes, as an individual you can discuss selling, buying, and trading as much as you'd like here.
Things outside the world of pencils kept me away from participating in the group to which I was so kindly invited, thanks for thinking of me. Looks like a lot of fun, I see the clutch situation guy, is Dave in? Chloe? It looks like I'm on the move. No, seriously, joining this group is going to cost me a lot of money, I feel it.
Nimrodd, do the P200's you sent me have stickers?
*Thread Reply:* The new ones do. The old pencils that I included, do not.
*Thread Reply:* new ones have stickers! very nice
Sigh. When a Buyee order from Mercari sits in the Order Received stage for too long and hasn't budged into Order Complete stage you know you're not gonna get the items. Sigh. Sigh.
Most of the time that is the case, but I’ve been surprised
There have been times when Mercari sellers state: please leave a comment if you wish to purchase. It may be a way to discourage proxy buyers (for whatever reasons). I have managed to get Buyee to leave a comment and overcome this problem.
Happy 4th to those in America! :us:
My mind has gone blank. I am trying to think of the term for an advertised item that is never sold (or at least no evidence of such an item in the wild). For example, the Pentel P155 0.5mm Injecto or the P227 & P229. I have never seen any of these items mentioned anywhere on the web with actual evidence.
Not the terms I was thinking of. Something along the lines of a Ghost product, but I can't think of it right now.
There we go. Vaporware, that is what I was trying to think of.
I knew the term was in my head somewhere, but I have dropped the card catalog for my memory too many times.
So the upcoming 90 day Slack message history kinda sucks. Maybe we can qualify as a non-profit?
*Thread Reply:* Yeah we'll lose some chat history with this free version.
We can either just keep rolling as is with the understanding that we will lose messages or we can start discussing if we want to somehow formalize this group and what that would look like.
*Thread Reply:* There is so much history here it would be a shame to lose it.
*Thread Reply:* True but a lot of what we discuss, at least in the Pentel world, is documented in the book
*Thread Reply:* But yea not being able to search here for old posts is a bummer
*Thread Reply:* Sure, but that’s just a slice of the pie.
*Thread Reply:* We can solve that with $8 per person per month.
*Thread Reply:* Not everyone will be willing to do that for occasional pencil chit chat, but can you have a mix of free users and pro?
*Thread Reply:* Or does it have to be all members of a workspace
*Thread Reply:* That's a good question.
*Thread Reply:* Over the past year or so I've brought up whether or not we want to do something more with this group but we haven't really had interest.
*Thread Reply:* One consideration was to move over to discord
*Thread Reply:* Pros and cons with that
*Thread Reply:* It would require extra work but if we had the interest it would be really cool for Knockology to do monthly zoom meetups, regional in person meetups every couple of years, attend pen and pencil shows, launch a platform for us to sell and trade, etc.
*Thread Reply:* Not sure we have the interest for that
Reading how supportive Jon Veley’s daughter is of his mechanical pencil journey and obsession is quite heart warming. Gives me the feels.
*Thread Reply:* It is a really nice story. It also sounds like they are thinking things through to make it successful.
Does anyone know of a good penetrating oil that won't harm plastic on Pentel pencils? There are some pencils where the lead reservoir is screwed into the front of the pencil, but I cannot get a tight enough grip (don't want to screw up the threads) to remove it from the body.
*Thread Reply:* I have used WD40 in mechanism and nothing bad happened, if you want to be safe use silicone grease.
*Thread Reply:* I have a few loose P200 bodies. I may try a couple of different oils on them to see if it harms the plastic.
*Thread Reply:* The pencils that are the front end screw are a Graph II, a very early PMG and a very early SG33.
Sadly, I just got a message via Messenger that George of My Supply Room passed away a few weeks ago. 😢
Fuck. I was looking forward to seeing him next month.
Wow that's unreal. Seeing his posts really inspired me to collect vintage mechanical pencils. Wish I could have met him.
Wish I'd known about him and his site much earlier. Rest in peace 🙏:skintone2:
I am pretty sure that I had found George's blog even before I found the pencil group on reddit. The width and depth of his collection really boggles the mind. Even though he was not always quick to respond to emails, when he did he was always helpful. I wish I had more interactions with him.
I got to meet him a couple of times, once at his Supply Room in Kileen, TX. The other time was at the Dallas Pen Show, which he planned to attend next month again. I will miss him.
Here is his obituary. https://kdhnews.com/obituaries/george-fox/article_1de1431a-12ca-11ed-9431-ffe25f6efd0d.html
Here is my wife's blog post about meeting him at his house. http://www.rhondaeudaly.com/2017/02/27/penpencil-review-meeting-my-supply-rooms-george-fox/
I remember googling pd345 in the early days of my collecting and found his blog and I knew then I had a long way to go just to get all of the basic quicker clickers. He never replied to any of my emails... hmmm... not sure what that says?! His collection was incredible. I wonder what his family will do with it - hopefully someone in his family takes an interest and looks after it.
Viewer contacted me about trying to find this pencil. I'm at a loss.
"I have been trying to find a specific mechanical pencil I used to use, about twenty years ago, and I was hoping you could help me. I think it was a staedtler but I am not completely sure though. These were commonly found in Norway about twenty years ago. The distinctive aspect of these mechanical pencils was the retractable tip: the entire tip would retract when the metal clip was pushed down. To bring the tip back out, you had to push down on the eraser cap, which made a very satisfying click. The retraction was at least about half an inch. I used to play with the retraction mechanism all the time, and its something I’d like to acquire again if possible."
I asked:
1) Was the body the same diameter the entire length? Was the grip bulged in any way?
2) Was it metal, plastic, a mixture? If a mixture, was the metal at the grip or near the eraser?
3) Was there any writing on the barrel? Even if you don't remember what it said? Was it in Norwegian, or German or Japanese, or English?
Trying to eliminate Technica-X, Pilot H-100X, Alvin Draftmatic...
"1) the body was the same diameter the entire length, except for the eraser cap, which was probably half the diameter of the main body and had a silver cap the tip was of course smaller too, also silver in color.
2)Except for the tip, everything else was plastic. The main body could be bought in either blue or black, whereas the plastic surrounding the grip was in a translucent plastic. The grip was rubber, which slid on to this translucent yellowish plastic, and was in a grid pattern. The eraser cap was, as I mentioned, before metallic looking but was chrome plated plastic. The eraser itself was red/pink in color. The clip was metal though, and the trigger for the retraction mechanism was underneath it, pressing down on which retracted the tip, and pushed out the eraser to a similar length as to the retracted tip. The tip was brought back out by pressing down on the eraser cap.
3)There was something written on the barrel but I don’t remember what. It definitely wasn’t made in Scandinavia, I want to say it said staedtler but I am not sure. I only ever saw it in 0.5 or 0.7."
This is where I get lost: "the plastic surrounding the grip was in a translucent plastic. The grip was rubber, which slid on to this translucent yellowish plastic, and was in a grid pattern."
Sounds like a Niji or Ohto OP500? Except the rubber grip was usually black. You could show a picture of it to see if the form is correct. It's possible for a variant to have a clear or translucent rubber grip.
Produced by Ohto, reproduced by damn near everyone
Niji, Y&C, Pyramid, and others
Definitely that pencil, though, as I cannot think of any others with the translucent section
