*Thread Reply:* Check out the Pentel International - 2006 Catalogue.pdf from my post on 5/17. Look at page 13 of the PDF (p 16 of the catalog). At the top are the Tradio pencils. This is the only catalog I know of that has the Tradio pencils.

Pentel "Nine"

The Pentel "Nine" was an inexpensive early knock-type pencil. It featured an all plastic body and a metal clutch an a reservoir which could hold a single 9.9mm lead. The styling is basic but functional. The colors (Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow) are relatively bright for Pentel's early pencils. These show up on auction sites occasionally but searching for them does not turn up an excessive number of results. There were two generations of this model. The first generation had the old Pentel logo and the second featured the new logo.

Unofficial model number: 9 Name: "Nine" Lead Size: 0.9mm Body: Smooth plastic Grip: Smooth plastic Clip: metal Eraser: none Period: early to late 60's Colors: A Black B Red C Blue G Yellow Dimensions: Lx:135.5 TtG:15.5 GtC:61.2 Gx:8.5 Gn:6

Notes: The color codes are not official. Examples of Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow have been recorded, but other colors may have been produced. In the 1970 slip the Nine pencils were listed at 100 Yen which put them at the lowest end of the range. There is no lead sleeve on this model.

The Taiwan barcodes were new to me, so I had to look up the codes at GS1.org to find the country and registration. They said that the check digit was wrong on these and that they should end in 3 instead of 7 (Gold) and 0 instead of 4 (Silver).

It's been a while since I looked at eBay listings. Looks like there's some serious asking prices on some pieces now. On one side I think it's pretty cool to see the perceived value on our collections going up but on the other side I prefer pieces to stay reasonable so that new collectors can acquire pieces.

I received an e-mail from someone to my blog about a week ago asking be about some marks on his P200 pencils (newer ones) under the clip, in line with the printed text. This mark was "8F". I remembered seeing similar codes in the text on the GraphGear 500 & 1000. In looking at other pencils, the highest letter I remember seeing was "L", which being the 12th letter of the English alphabet, made me think that this is a month code, which would probably make the number, the last digit of the year of manufacture.

I just got a reply today from Pentel confirming this suspicion.

I don't remember off-hand which pencil, but I have seen it on other Graph or GraphGear pencils printed under the clip as well.

I just received this pencil today. It is a P205B Generation 2 pencil (early 70's) that I got from the Netherlands.

Before today, I did not know that the P205B was manufactured before Generation 5 (late 80's), but it appears that it was just not available in the US. Now that I know to look for these, I hope to find more to fill the gap (Gen 3 & 4).

It did not appear on the German 1975 page, so I did not suspect it to exist.

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2021-07-08 12:46:30

Someone on Reddit commented that the P205B that I posted looked like a Pentel Eleven in the picture. It got me thinking that the grip of the P200 could be a tribute to it's predecessor. The grip of all P200's have 11 rings.

Knocktype11 ([email protected])
2021-07-08 14:20:51

*Thread Reply:* I saw that mentioned as well. If you look in the middle section of the P200 pencils, it also has 11 sides, but that is because 2 sides are merged to form a cleaner print area

As per the mention of the Pentel 11 by @Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) previously. I have been looking at this model recently and found some interesting information. The model number is S305. The very last generation did not even include 11 anywhere on it and had the new logo. This is a very interesting page on the S305 and Pentel 11 history (in Korean): https://m.blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?isHttpsRedirect=true&blogId=legoking55&logNo=221752455499 Here is an earlier page on the 11 only (also in Korean): https://m.blog.naver.com/penessay/100141571686

These pages have some pretty mind-blowing information (specifically .7 .9 and 1.1mm lead sizes) and are worth running through your favorite translator.

Recently an auction on yahoo.jp finished for a pencil which I am not completely sure was a legit Pentel. It is a double-knock Pentel: https://zenmarket.jp/auction.aspx?itemCode=572250555

Has anyone seen this pencil in real life? Do you know the model number? The top metal part is real but the mechanism, grip, tip, and cap look more like a Pilot to my eye.

I have not seen this before. Opposite colors from the PSD5 (black body, silver grip). The tip is different from it as well, and I don't remember ever seeing anything like the "W" on the opposite side from the "Pentel 5".

The fact that there are threads on the grip which are not used makes me very suspicious. I vaguely recall seeing a "W" on the top part of a pencil before. It was before I really paying attention to (or could tell) what was unusual. The color setup matches the "accounting" pencils.

Sadly I did not win this one. It went for more that I wanted to pay for it.

This is the type of pencil which makes me happy. On first look it is a classic deluxe. But it has some features which made me reevaluate my understanding of this line. It must be from the 60s since it has the old logo. But, this is the only one from this era that I have seen with a gold colored top. All of the other S5x pencils have had silver/grey tops. There is alot of variation there also but that is another topic. The kicker is this pencil uses 0.9mm lead! But wait, it has a big 5 and the word "five" on it. What is going on here? A mismatched lead size and number on the front places it before this was standardized. Some later models of the S59 had gold tops, but not all. Some even had silver tops and a large 9. I know that there was a 0.7mm model produced with a 5 on it also.

Any Kerry experts in the house?

I know of two generations of Kerry: The first which had the "5" under the clip and the second which has "Kerry since 1971" under the clip. The first generation had a cleanout rod integrated into the body end cap. This does not seem to be present in the second generation. Are there finer or less obvious changes between Kerry's of today vs the generation produced in 1971? I know that colors have come and gone and there have been a couple of special editions. I'm not asking about those, only main-line models.

Even though the P1037 pencils say "since 1971", I don't think that they were introduced until later. I have not seen any with a "7" on the front. The first time it shows up in any catalog is 2006. Does anyone have any verifiable information about this?

Bottom to Top Late 70's-Early 80's Triangular Price Sticker - Notice that the attachment just behind the spring is clamped all the way around. Also, the lead reservoir cap is slightly different from the others.

Early 80's-late 80's Square Price Sticker - Attachment point is just clamped on 2 sides with a relatively wide bite.

Early 2000's Kerry Since 1971 - Attachment clamp is like the second from bottom, but is narrower.

Brand New Silver Gold Kerry Legend - Attachment clamp is not as clean as the early 2000's, and the base the spring rests on is no longer brass, but plastic.

What is a P135? It is listed in the lead diameter section of the Pentel US 1982 catalog under Writing Pencils. It is not listed elsewhere in the catalog. I currently have this filed under "Real Pentel or Typo?". Most likely it is typo QC was not too good in that section since they include S55 twice, maybe because it is so nice.

Internals of P545 I don't have dates for these pencils. Given the internals and the fact that they are not in any of the 1979 or later catalogs they were likely only made during the early 70s. Thr reservoir clamp on one has some weird additional clamp marks.

Down the Pentel Rabbit Hole to find the P245

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2021-11-29 16:24:10

I started down a rabbit hole this afternoon involving Pentel. I was looking for an answer that someone asked on another post about 0.2mm pencils. I found this website (http://pentel.blog.jp/) and it's post about the Orenz 0.2mm and it's predecessor.

I then checked out some of the other posts and came across this one (http://pentel.blog.jp/archives/10412223.html) about the Graph 1000. About half-way down, I saw a picture of some Pentels that I did not recognize, the P115, which they said was probably a predecessor to the Graph 1000 grip.

I decided to look at my catalogs to see if I could find this one listed, but all I found were the P105, P125 & P145. I was familiar with the P105, but off-hand, could not picture the P125 or P145, so I looked them up in the catalogs.

The P145 appeared only in 1 catalog that I have a PDF of, the 1997 International catalog on page 91. When I took a look at it, I thought, that is the second generation of P245.

From my other catalogs, I find that the P245 (1st gen) was released in 1979, and also appears in the 1982 catalog.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/nimrodd/51714542344

My next catalog (US 1984) shows the second generation. This one appears in the 1985, 1990-91 & 1994 US catalogs, with the 1990-91 & 1994 catalogs also including the P247, and also giving it the name Bravo.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/nimrodd/51713880166

Looking for other information about the P245, I found this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/9ndszn/pentel_bravo_p245_p247_with_question/) by u/foetusized from 3 years ago, where he asked about the 2mm/4mm tip variation.

I came across what is probably the answer to the question he asked. In the 1984, 1985 & 1990-91 catalogs, these description partially reads "Features a 2mm fixed sleeve." In the 1994 catalog reads "with 4mm fixed sleeve for template work."

The next US catalog I have is the 2000-2001, and the P245 is no longer listed, but in the 1997 Internaional catalog, they list as coming from Taiwan, the P143, P145, P147 & P149, and they look exactly the same.

This is new. For some time in the late 70s to maybe the early 80s Pentel printed a date code on some lead reservoirs. All that I have seen have been 6 digits YYMMDD. Today i found one with only 5 digits: 70717. It does not look like the first or laat number has worn off.

Does anyone have a spare clue about this?

*Thread Reply:* I'm a little slow to reply on this. The pastel colors are really nice. There are some regular (PP50x) orenz pencils with very similar colors. The green and blue look very similar. Do you have any of these for comparison? Excellent writeup BTW. Seeing the misprints is different. When you collect mostly vintage pencils it is hard to distinguish wear from manufacturing mistakes.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:49:32

Here's one of mine in orange. They also have hot pink like above and green.

2021-12-15 18:50:50

FFS now I have another set to find!

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:51:03

It's based off of the Quicksharp PD355

2021-12-15 18:53:32

Are there just the two? Only really seeing orange and that red you have.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:53:49

There's a green

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:54:02

Some people pay over $100 for a single one

2021-12-15 18:55:21

Is the green a side clicker too?

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:56:12

Yeah. All of the PQ11s are the same quicker clicker you know but with the Quicksharp eraser top

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:56:58

I pretty much only click side knocks that are that base model.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:57:28

So that's the pd325, 335, 345,7,9, and 355

2021-12-15 18:57:35

Yeah I like that line.

2021-12-15 18:58:41

Both for keeping things from getting crazy collecting and also because I grew up with the QC.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:58:44

2021-12-15 18:59:03

Yeah those are not very nice

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 18:59:44

But I do have some of the pd1065 and 1055

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 19:00:12

Also the original side knock, the Pecker

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-15 19:00:36

And I don't have any of the quicker clickers with rubber grips.

2021-12-15 19:00:59

You gotta have some other stuff in the collection.

2021-12-15 19:01:17

Yeah I only have those for being abused

2021-12-15 19:01:44

I don't cart around any of my good ones.

2021-12-15 19:02:15

You may all know this but if not......

I shop on Yahoo! Auctions and Mercari and use Buyee as the proxy. (I originally used ZenMarket as the proxy but Buyee can proxy for both Yahoo and Mercari.)

When searching either directly on Yahoo! Auctions or Mercari you can get different results based off of searching in english or Japanese. If I search for "Pentel side knock" vs. "ぺんてる サイドノック" I'll get different results and oftentimes better results with the Japanese search.

You can also sometimes search for both Japanese and English keywords at the same time and get different results.

Also, sometimes product lines like "Pentel Person’s" includes the apostrophe and sometimes it doesn't. It is also sometimes misspelled as "Parsons". So you can also search for possible mispellings.

And lastly, @Knocktype11 knows what I collect so he checks in with me on certain items. Now that @Heath is here, and is starting to collect some of the same items as me, we'll need to coordinate on some items so we don't bid against in each unintentionally. @Ƶ also collects a lot of the same. We all know what @Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) collects but he doesn't seem to be missing much 😀.

*Thread Reply:* I usually don't search on Zenmarket except for looking at other auctions by a seller. The same English/Japanese search techniques work on yahoo.jp. Still there seem to be some corner cases which are missed even with both.

But if you buy more than one with a given color the transaction fee is still 300yen. I thought about doing some Popn'Pop arbitrage but decided against it. I will say that the yamauchiya pencils are NOS.

2021-12-18 14:24:20

My main collection is original quicker-clickers, so pd345/7/9 and related pentels. No rubber grips!!! I'm still hunting a few of the rarest ones including the grey/silver pd515 (not the jetclic) and select pd335 colours (popnpop and non-popnpop). I've also seen pics of a completely transparent QC and a white solid barrel QC both of which I think might have been promo versions because I've never seen them for sale. I'm also chasing a blue pd355 and a pink pd15. Plus any QC juniors would be a welcome addition. I think that sums it up for the main collection.

2021-12-18 14:24:59

Is it recommended to post collection pics in here?

I've mostly bought off ebay though I am open to trades. I'm open to suggestions as to other methods. My habit started in the mid-80s when a teacher was using a charcoal pd345. I was a kid of limited means back then but never lost the interest. Things picked up again a few years ago and I've been lurking on ebay ever since.

I don't think that Jimmy's pencil is a P1075. The P1075s that I have are painted in the grooves, and have wavy grooves, and have P1075 on the smooth area above the grip. I would really like to know about these as well.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-02-05 10:24:26

*Thread Reply:* Now that I think about it, all of the PD355 style pencils that I have (that I was able to date) aren't any older than 1997.

The body of the PD355 style is the same body of the PD345. This may give us some evidence that the introduction of the rubber grip was 98ish since there seems to be no PD355 after 1997.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-02-05 10:26:32

*Thread Reply:* If the rubber grip Quicker Clicker came out in 98ish that doesn't mean we weren't still able to get the non-grip one for a couple more years due to inventory already being out there. I seem to remember still buying the non rubber grip ones from Walmart in 1999.

Can anyone confirm that this products photo is indeed from 1975? I'm having my doubts.

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:04:34

I found it on the Pentel Switzerland website a few years ago. It has since been removed, but you might try contacting them to ask.

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:05:43

I use it as my basis for the change from Gen 2 to Gen 3 on the P200 pencils, and use the date of 1975.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:23:10

Hmm. There's a PD1065 in the photo which as far as we know came out in 1979. The PD345 came out in 1977 and they immediately claimed it as the first side click pencil. If this photo is indeed from 1975 then they already had a side knock prior to the PD345.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:26:41

and a side note.... we also do not fully know which side knock truly came first. The Pentel PD345 or the Mitsubishi Pecker.

Knocktype11 ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:28:42

Pd1065 was from 1975

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:29:14

I wonder why Pentel then claims their PD345 as the first side knock

Knocktype11 ([email protected])
2021-12-25 21:41:57

Retcon. They still make the pd345. Pentel's record of accurate history is somewhat tenuous.

I never saw that one - I agree with a lot of what you say about it and also wasn’t initially going to try and collect them, however, as you said, it’s a Clic. I also have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised with how it felt to use. I like it much more after having it in hand.

I’ll probably get a few more. Ron has a sick cream one up right now that I’ll definitely grab.

So regarding manufacturing marks on the PD34x series, I’ve found there are marks on the caps, on the bottle under the clip, and on the underside of the clicker. Has anyone tried putting these all together like @Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) has done with the P200 series to try and determine origins or whatnot?

2022-01-03 13:21:38

I just looked at all my caps and have pretty much every letter of the alphabet between them all…

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2022-01-03 13:23:39

As far as I know, all the 2 character Date Codes are a single number and a letter A-L. The number represents the last digit of the year, and the letters are the months (A=Jan, L = Dec, etc.)

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])
2022-01-03 13:23:55

Are these a different code structure?

2022-01-03 13:24:06

Also interesting to note - the PD335 caps are ribbed where the 34x’s are smooth.

The insides can be swapped with some of the Tradio pens. The "click" of the cap to the main body sometimes isn't quite as tight though.

2022-01-03 15:52:23

Yes, I see that, and it looks like a standard Date Code. The ones I have are 4A, 4A and 3E, which would more than likely be January 2004 (x2) and May 2003.

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])

So the 3G on one of my blue transparent PD345's could be either July 1983 or 1993?

*Thread Reply:* But the 27 mold mark would maybe make me think on the later side… need to check a few more to compare.

2022-01-03 16:11:31

This is one of my black 345’s. The 6C is clear but not really sure what the other marking is.

2022-01-03 16:12:34

Kinda looks like a big 5?

2022-01-03 16:18:02

Here's the black one with Pentel Clic on the side:

2022-01-03 16:18:56

Think it’s the first lowercase letter I’ve seen - 8b

2022-01-03 16:19:06

and also a big 5, but sloppy

2022-01-03 16:35:29

Another interesting note, when comparing the loading hole size, the one’s I have with Clic on them, the holes are much smaller than what I’ve seen. Not sure if I captured it here

2022-01-03 16:35:45

The blue is easy to see

2022-01-03 16:36:05

And so is the smaller black one

2022-01-03 16:37:22

So at some point they widened the opening… wonder if it was when the transparent versions hit?

2022-01-03 16:43:11

Ok two transparent blues. One I am fairly certain I bought in the 90’s (right, odd date code, just a 6) and an eBay item (left, date code 5A). So I think they widened the opening sometime in the 90’s and looks to be a great way to indicate 80’s or 90’s.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-01-03 19:11:39

Ok I checked several of my PD family pencils. Here's what I found in regards to the small-hole/big-hole discussion: • All PD335s have small holes • All of my PD345 with green erasers with the cleaning needle have small holes (note that erasers could easily get swapped out but I believe all of mine are untouched originals.) ◦ All of my PD345 with white erasers and no cleaning need have big holes • All of my solid PD347 and PD349 with green erasers with the cleaning needle have small holes ◦ All of my solid PD347 and PD349 with white erasers and no cleaning needle have big holes • All of my transparent PD347 and PD349 have white erasers and big hole. The transparent .07 and .09 came out in 1994 • All of my PD355 have big holes • All of my Clear Clic PD345 have big holes Without taking off the pocket clip to see the year stampings (I'll let @Heath do that) it appears that the small hole barrels were from 1977 - 1993. Heath's work may help us verify when they switched to the white erasers. I had always assumed 1993.

2022-01-04 16:32:53

*Thread Reply:* Couple questions: • Your DPD355's - wide hole or small? If those are 80's vintage, they should be small. • When did the PD345T first come out? • When did they stop selling the PD345/7/9 Solids? • Is there a timeline already somewhere?

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])

*Thread Reply:* Wait, when did the transparent PD345's begin? I first see them in the 82 catalog.

2022-01-03 19:50:53

Has a clearing pin, but as you say, easily swapped

2022-01-03 19:51:58

But don’t think so - the clicker on this one is pristine

@Heath do you have calipers? Can you measure the diameter of the holes?

2022-01-03 19:53:42

Unfortunately I don’t have any - but have been looking for an excuse to pick up a set!

I will once I do

It is a Rush On Goal

Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) ([email protected])

Not sure of the exact model, but suspect it is a P585.

There are at least 10 different designs on the Rush On Goal.

Yeah I saw that. I still haven't figured out how to order from there.

2022-01-06 08:23:22

Make sure you don’t have any blocking going on

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-01-06 08:25:25

Yea I can get to the site just never attempted to order in the past. Not sure how to ship. Guess it's time to figure out.

2022-01-06 08:25:44

You should get a Tenso account

2022-01-06 08:25:53

You get a local address to ship to

2022-01-06 08:26:03

and they turn it around just like Buyee

2022-01-06 08:51:18

Not sure if helpful, but here is my Tenso address, first in Japanese, second in English, and third how I entered in Yamauchiya

Thank you. That will probably help

Go to "Other Shops". It will take a little while for Zen to figure out how much including shipping and charges. (Zen charges 200 per different item, including color) .

2022-01-06 11:19:34

Tenso charges per package and it’s just the shipping and handling. Plus you have an address to use with other obscure shops that don’t do Buyee/Zen.

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-01-06 11:21:38

cool. I'm waiting for approval for Tenso

2022-01-06 11:21:43

you guys are awesome and helpful

2022-01-06 11:23:58

Separately, what about an actual account on Yahoo! JP? It seems that they want a phone number to register.

2022-01-06 11:25:01

I wanted to create one because there are sometimes blocks on Buyee/Zen

2022-01-06 11:25:13

For certain auctions

Knocktype11 ([email protected])
2022-01-06 14:55:42

I've had Zen block some auctions. But mostly they will unblock on request if the seller is not a likely scam or problem for them to deal with.

2022-01-06 14:56:06

Yep, they just did for me.

2022-01-06 18:43:42

@sideKnocks (atxalais) there's a white clip transparent purple pd335 on yahoo japan auctions

sideKnocks (atxalais) ([email protected])
2022-01-06 18:44:16

Is it with a group of other pencils?

2022-01-06 18:44:20

It's real dirty in a group

2022-01-06 18:44:33

Yeah that's the one

What years were the yellow geeen and orange from? They have a real early 70s pallet.

2022-01-06 18:50:22

I was just about to say - those aren't white are they?

2022-01-06 18:50:23

I'm sure we can sort out a trade

2022-01-06 18:50:49

2 of the white clips are just badly aged
