I've been going back and forth for quite some time on adding a Revolution to the collection. I am a sucker for when something is featured in the Modern Art Museum in New York.
*Thread Reply:* That is a nice one! I have the plain silver version on a similar stand. They are much better to write with than I was expecting! Do you also have the feeling that with some of the right tools you could make one yourself?
*Thread Reply:* absolutely but I’ve been tempted to just have Lindsay make a custom one for me.
*Thread Reply:* I have the black on the same stand. My wife got it for me 8-10 years ago.
*Thread Reply:* https://www.flickr.com/photos/nimrodd/50092340166 https://www.flickr.com/photos/nimrodd/50092573977
*Thread Reply:* Oh that would have been a cool surprise.
My wife does know this pencil exists but these days it wouldn’t be that easy for her to find.

I've been on the hunt for this pencil for way too long. It's a Slim Word SAN-X 0.3mm side knock. I will find it!
*Thread Reply:* I like the color. When and where were the made?
*Thread Reply:* as a collector of side knocks it's kinda important for me to find!
*Thread Reply:* printed on the barrel, right about the knock button, there is the word "Knock" with an arrow pointing down to the knock.
*Thread Reply:* You can kinda see it here
I really like brass pencils and how they make my hand smell after drawing with one. Here’s a brand new Special Brass right out of the package and then on day 2. Love the patina.
*Thread Reply:* Wow! The patina really sets in quickly. Is there a way to clear coat them to keep the original shine or is that something which is just not done?
*Thread Reply:* Yea you could keep it from tarnishing with a seal.
If you don’t use it it won’t tarnish like that. I like keeping those in the collection clean and shiny but the ones I use I like how it reacts to your hands.
I’m fascinated with the pencils that they’ve taken to outer space. Here is a Skilcraft brand one adapted for spaceflight with attached velcro, tether cord, and clip.
I have a box of these and am considering making some replicas.
*Thread Reply:* It must have been used on the shuttle. I understood that there were no pencils on the ISSS.

These are interesting. Is the bottom one a ballpoint pen?
*Thread Reply:* Pretty sure it's a pencil; you can see a little lead sticking out lol
PODD: Sailor 0.7mm twist advance pencil
I don't recall seeing any 0.7 mm pencils with twist advance. Was this really a thing that I completely missed? This one was acquired with some other pencils. It is very attractive but comes attached to more questions than answers.
Isn't Sailor moreknown for fountain pens? Does anyone know avout this one?
Anybody have this Kohinoor 5617 Mechanical Pencil?
Does anyone have a source for a parafernalia revolution pencil?
Yeah I see the pens around. I had Papier Plum over in New Orleans looking out a while back but nothing.
I should have pulled the trigger a few years ago.
I'm going to order a few from here, but since you lead (pun intended) me to them, have a go at them first if you want: https://www.giardino.it/pens/parafernalia/revolution.php#valuta
And since thy don't make them any longer, I was going to get one of each that they have.
From not knowing about them to ordering all? Hah
I've been wanting one for a while just never pulled the trigger.
I really didn't want to buy myself another platinum z for Xmas.
A green one would be a perfect Xmas ornament for the tree.
Oh this could be a fun game. See what pencil we can get Heath to buy.
I'm hoping that the pens are the same size and you can swap the barrels out.
What makes you say that? And I'm talking about the colored barrels, not anything else. So unless they're physically larger…
Oh. Thought you mean swapping pen and pencils
@Heath They got the orders mixed up and shipped yours first and no longer have any in stock.
Once you get them let's discuss me grabbing at least one off of you.
No. They had just enough for your order
Which came second but they missed that
Doesn't really matter - I got 4 and you can have 2 of them.
And I just want the chrome one, so you tell me which colors you want.
This is another I found but it requires some verification items to sign up to make sure you're a business I guess. Anyway, funny thing is that I do have a business. So I'm going to try and get through the verification process and hopefully they have them like they say they do.
Yeah I have a business as well. Let me know how that goes.
We need to verify if they actually do or do not still make these.
Ok, here is another. I’ve emailed them to ask about stock, but their site says they have a fair number of colors:
https://www.thepaperplace.gr/product/parafernalia-revolution-2185-mechanical-pencil/?lang=en
I got a reply and they have black, light green, turquoise, purple and bronze. Waiting to hear how many of each but you should take a swipe first. I'm going to try for a black, turquoise and purple I think.
I'll just wait till you get the other ones in from Giardino.it and go from there
You sure? I don't want you regretting not getting a few more while you can.
I'm not looking to swipe them all out.
I haven't gotten confirmation that they aren't making more but go ahead and order more from those other sources. I can get the ones I originally ordered from Giardino from you once they come in.
They didn't have green though. Which colors did you want?
but if you want more I'll just take one. I'm not looking for a complete set.
let's wait till you get them in and I'll take a look at the pics and see which color I'll take
you should be spending more time getting all of the 50th anni Kerrys, right? 😉
That's cool. I'm gonna look for a place to send the bits for chrome plating. 😂
Actually I am in love with the Staedtler 925 limited’s.
@sideKnocks (atxalais) those arrived today. They all look nice. The chrome one is clearly older and has a different tip. Unfortunately I'm not sure the build quality is as nice as the newer ones but it is great looking! The tip is a little cocked to one side and something is off near the top, but again, really nice.
Looks like they didn't come with the originally wooden stand.
And my apologies if the packages smells like some old lady packed it up - was at the store this morning with my daughter who was trying to find some perfume for the wife. 🤣
Hah. I'd prefer to think you were asking me to prom.
The chrome pencil has the same style tip that mine has; a black plastic one. I can't tell for sure, but the color pencil tips look like smaller chrome tips, is this correct?
The tip on mine is like the chrome one also. Mine is brushed silver though.
@Jimmy Simpson (Nimrodd) sorry I missed your question - I'm not positive if they're plastic or metal yet, but they are smaller and all black, including the sleeve and are not chrome.
FYI: Parafernalia will begin producing the Revolution pencil sometime next year. They are hoping to begin in the Spring but it depends on getting new mechanisms.
“In your order i had include the latest version of printed catalog that had the Revolution 0.5mm
Soon the company will change the mechanism and produce the Revolution 0.7mm”
That must be what's going on. Looking forward to the 7
He sent me a pdf of the catalog too if anyone wants it. I think I've found them online fairly readily though.

Here's my Handmade Mark II and my Bamboo Geometric. I haven't put the Bamboo to use but I'm thinking about retiring the Mark II from the rotation.
I have a Titanium and a Carbon Fiber by Nicholas Hemingway.
To me they just seem too plain. They are just a tube, with nothing to make them stand out.
Yeah. I ordered the Mark II a couple of years ago. Wanted to get into a cheaper version first. Didn't order anymore but use this one in the studio from time to time.
Ok, I suck at searching Slack threads, but I managed to dig out my Platinum Double Action (circa 1978). To disassemble, you basically press against the 2 retainer nubs and lift the respective tubes out.
Then comes the REAL challenge. As in after unscrewing the tip for the ballpoint, what kind of refill could fit in there? After trying I don't know how many spares, it ended up being a China-made Hero 590 that was made for a craptastic multipen that I got off eBay a long time ago.
Additional work: I had to hack a stopper for the spring and lengthen the tube. Honestly, I don't know where to find these refills anymore. The skinny tip reminds me of European ISO A3 but those are typically all-metal and unhackable…
*Thread Reply:* Thanks for that! I was going to try to pull it out from the pointy end. Clearly that would have been a bad idea. I got the pen part out and it looks like it has a good deal of ink in it but it may be dry. Getting it back was much more fiddly than taking it out. Have you seen any which were not .5mm?
Nice job finding a “workable” replacement.
Having to add a stopper for the spring would nag at me. I'm a purist and stuff like that gets me.
Amazing! I'm sitting on 5 or 6 Sailor Cartridge pencils (and one Schaeffer) that I can't get to work because I don't have any refill replacement.
I also couldn't follow your Sailor Cartridge tutorial because the internals on mine were all slightly different!
Some of these non-traditional refill methods seem totally hare-brained in retrospect
If you can't just toss a 60mm piece of graphite in there, to hell with it

Orange Kokuyo Mistral Body Knock on Mercari: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m46242670916
GREAT price for one of these in amazing condition
These are some of my very favorites, and I certainly think they're the best expression of body knocks that exist
Would consider making one of these a daily driver, tbh
I’m confused by the pictures… are they showing 2 different items?
I've had the Mistral on my mind the past year or so but haven't shopped much for it
I put body knocks somewhat in my side knocks world
I grabbed that orange Mistral. I'm excited about that. Been eying them for too long.
If anyone’s interested in Parafernalia Revolution 0.5's this place has a bunch and they said they all come with the wood stand. You will want to verify stock though - they didn’t show any blue or green until I reached out and they found some in their inventory but I don’t know how many. https://www.lastilograficamilano.it/en/1-products-catalog/22-parafernalia-pens/215-parafernalia-revolution-matita-
Some of those stands don't come in the best condition unfortunately
Look what just popped up on eBay! I’ve never seen this clip style or pencil style or color leading me to think it’s fairly old. https://www.ebay.com/itm/265499179790?hash=item3dd0fbfb0e:g:rSsAAOSweVVh4E~~
*Thread Reply:* haha, I got it now - sorry I’m not a football fan really
*Thread Reply:* I'm not either but growing up my father was. I went to 100s of nfl games growing up.
Watch zero football now.
*Thread Reply:* Hell, we don't even have a tv in this house.
Just got my recent order from Italy which almost completes the latest colors.
*Thread Reply:* I can't get over this photo. The colors. 🤤
*Thread Reply:* I can’t get any damn work done. I keep staring at them.
*Thread Reply:* I thought tech people didn't work on Friday's
*Thread Reply:* Gotta get in on that 4 day metaverse train, Holmes
*Thread Reply:* I have a fairly flexible work life balance going so it works.
*Thread Reply:* Yeah same here. 👊
*Thread Reply:* Looks like your package will be there tomorrow!
*Thread Reply:* Yeah I got a text from ups that 4 packages will be here tomorrow. Imma open yours first.
And they did send another catalog so that will be in with your yellow.
So you went from never seen to having all of them in like 2 weeks?
We have another Pearson on our hands. 😆
I wasn’t totally decided I was all in until I received the first few and the colors were just awesome.
And then I had to give up my blue one to @sideKnocks (atxalais)
I don't understand the phrase "you can't find them anywhere" in this context.
They’re hard to find - I could only find them in Italy and Greece
@sideKnocks (atxalais), the chrome one was out of whack because the pipes were different lengths. I had to file them down to be the same lengths.
It was only off by .05 but it was enough to throw the whole thing out of whack.
I bought 3 versions of a Turquoise Pilot H-505 today because I wanted to make sure I got at least one that was minty 😔
I also created a problem for myself—all my Pilot executives are in groups of 5, but this will make 6 H-505s...
(and then I hear a voice in my head saying, "keep a few of the extras for spare parts in teh future, even though this is unlikely to ever come up")
Exactly, but only immediately after I sell the extras
and then antoher in better condition will pop up at a better price
I'll keep it simple today Yellow p225 and yellow p229
oooh, I think I've only seen a yellow P225 one time
So I only want a 2000 if it's actually a great pencil
Have always preferred Lamy’s pens to their pencils. The 2000 is a design classic but… I've never desired it as an MP because the girth (to me) isn't ideal for drawing. For a nice Lamy pencil, go for the Scribble! :-)
Love it! I'll see if I can track one of those down
Such a great lot here—shame the NEwman is damaged
The Newman ‘製図用’ would go for at least 6000 on its own, but for the scratch near the tip… blue grip Mistral 👍:skintone2:… 2 Mitsubishi Brain with red accents…
Hope you land this one!
I have the blue and orange, and I REALLY love them
Anyone know if this was a Muji release at some point? There are no markings, and it looks like a Schmidt mechanism to me...
Yes this is a MUJI series from around 2006. You can swap the internals for BP or MP. The silver knock cap fits over the colored accent of the refill… has a tendency of splitting or cracking from the tight fit.
AWesome, thank you! Hadn't seen this one before, but I've been pretty impressed with two of the other Mujis I found in this big lot 💯
What am I looking at here? That pencil on the left looks like an H-1005...
*Thread Reply:* It is evocative ofthe H-1005. The clip and tip are different. Zoom in on the picture where they are parallel and above the ring are the letters which could be "orol" or "oral" or maybe even "erol".
I am not a pilot expert but it does not look like a H-1005 to me. Why don't you send a message to the seller and ask what is printed/impressed on that pencil?
*Thread Reply:* I guess my larger point is: Is this a double knock? If so, it's the first one I've ever seen from Parker (if this is indeed a Parker)
Is it actually a ballpoint pen? I've never seen one before.
Got my vintage gold Revolution in today. Here are some comparisons between it and a newer one. The black one in the stand is a pen of the same vintage. Overall it's longer. The tip is metal, not plastic. The clips are totally different. And they used Phillips instead of flathead screws. The tip was a little damaged from a prior drop but I was able to clean it up so the lead comes out nicely now without shaving. Unfortunately I still don't know the time frame.
*Thread Reply:* Beautiful piece! That clip looks to be way more steady than the current one.
Oh yeah, and the cap is like typical caps that slide on, compared to the newer which is a plug.
@Pearsonified I’m sure you’ve seen these, but anyone have any experience with these double knocks? How’s the price? https://jp.mercari.com/item/m66607780841 https://jp.mercari.com/item/m65860114289 https://jp.mercari.com/item/m65262433353
*Thread Reply:* These are prettty nice. The price is not bad if the condition is like new. I like the color of the orange one. Colleen made the best green and orange pencils
*Thread Reply:* I am not buying anything right now, so have at it if you like. My wallet has to cool off for a minute after the Revolution sprint.
*Thread Reply:* Thanks! I don't have anything I am currently buying through buyee. Maybe it is time to look again.
*Thread Reply:* First, I love the Colleen Jib double knocks—they're among the finest ones anyone ever produced
*Thread Reply:* These particular models have a short axis with short grip area, and unfortunately, the black and silver ones are quite slippery. I suspect the orange one is slippery as well, but here's the thing—not everybody will find them slippery, depending on their preferred style of holding the pencil
*Thread Reply:* The double knock action is really pleasing, and they are easy to "seat" and calibrate perfectly (so the tip comes out just the right amount).
*Thread Reply:* Prices are ok; you can definitely find multiple pieces in lots for a cheaper price if you are patient
*Thread Reply:* The 2700¥ for the orange is slightly more than I'm willing to pay for that model
*Thread Reply:* I like 1000–2000¥ for the short gripped models, with the notable exceptions being ones that had textured grip sections and different clips (link incoming, one sec)
*Thread Reply:* https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r400127168 <--- this is worth up to 3000¥ IMO
*Thread Reply:* And this may well be the single best double knock they ever produced:
*Thread Reply:* looks innocuous, but it's just a badass pencil that does everything right
*Thread Reply:* Note the different clip on that first link; it's got a gothic script "J" for Jib
*Thread Reply:* All the short-axis double knocks that have this clip are amazing
*Thread Reply:* I also love Colleen's gold lead—such a fun marketing play, and a great way to set the brand apart.
I was able to snag 1 container each of B and 2B, so all my Jibs are as high octane as possible 🔥
Their standard HB just doesn't cut it for me, and even the B and 2B are too light for my tastes. Still, tho—gotta go with the gold in these no matter what :firstplacemedal:
*Thread Reply:* You're a wealth of information. Gold lead sounds amazing!
*Thread Reply:* Too bad the gold lead is total crap to write with. It is too squeaky for my taste.
*Thread Reply:* While it's not as nice as any of the leads available today, I find the B and 2B to be acceptable to write with. I haven't noticed any squeaking (that would make me stop using the lead immediately)
Does anyone have a AW Faber-Castell Datagraph? The one with the funky 70’s computer font markings and twist feed? Just saw one go for 18000 on YJA…
*Thread Reply:* I don't, but it is extremely funky. It would be a treasure in any collection!
*Thread Reply:* Oh wow. I don't have this. So cool.
Platinum W-knocks (I have the orange and yellow)
Love those 4 colors together (and am totally enamored with the green)
*Thread Reply:* I managed to buy a couple of these from Rakuten Taiwan. Seems they were either made for or sold through Platinum Taiwan.
*Thread Reply:* Crazy! I thought Rakuten only sold pencils that were currently in production...
Yes, W-knock is a common Japanese designation for "double knock"
Mitsubishi, Platinum, and Colleen all had at least one series called the W-knock
Not sure if you guys have seen this one. Here is my Pelikan No.1 Luigi Colani.
*Thread Reply:* That is a cool looking pencil. I am noticing that the amount of space inside of the click is really large. You would need deep pockets to carry this one around.
Does it have an eraser?
*Thread Reply:* Is the tip retractable? This does not look to be pocket-safe. Then again it may be too cool to hide in a pocket anyways.
*Thread Reply:* Nope but the tip is like a ballpoint pen.
*Thread Reply:* Cool looking pencil but the knock mechanism is very disappointing. Very janky to knock.
*Thread Reply:* Luigi Colani… one of the first industrial designers to apply organic styling for ergonomics. I love the plastic editions of his ‘No. 1’ for Pelikan. It seems that the MP was only released in white?
*Thread Reply:* Yes, MPs were only white.
Oh my! 😳 https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d1030794844
The Berols are gorgeous! But since I already have a 0.5 and a 0.3, I think I will just soldier on and seek out the 0.7 separately.
Why are there so many vintage rotary pencils in America, and why do I hate them all so much?
We really have the worst resale market for MPs.
I live for the random "Willie" in New Jersey who just found 8 NIB Technomatics
Meanwhile, YAJ be like, "My grandpa gifted me this full set of Hi Mecha Pilots, is this worth anything?"
Here's my Z. I absolutely love this piece.
*Thread Reply:* There are not alot of non-Pentel pencils which I find to be as cool as the Z.
*Thread Reply:* There's not a lot of pencil collectors that I find to be as cool as @Knocktype11
🕺:skintone2:
*Thread Reply:* This was the pencil I knew I had to get when I got hold of the Lamy unic…
*Thread Reply:* Damn, that's beautiful! I'm enjoying your pictures, too, @sideKnocks (atxalais)
Very disappointed to note the first signs of rubber degradation on my Zebra Tect 2way. The O-rings in the grip starting to get some sticky spots. Perhaps it is karma - I got it on 01-April 2007🙂
*Thread Reply:* I have such a hard time with rubber grips, even when it's just little dots or rings.
*Thread Reply:* I really like the aesthetics of the Tect 2way, but now I guess I can't get anymore, knowing they will degrade. The thing is, I really feel it is unnecessary. There are elastomers all the pencil manufacturers they could use that have extremely long lives. But they cost more, and they want our pencils to expire and be replaced 😞
*Thread Reply:* I've always thought the Tect 2way’s grip rings were silicone… I actually went to a hardware store and purchased some black and clear silicone rings of a similar diameter (can't recall the sizes off the top of my head) to customise one of my Tects and also a couple of my OHTO ‘Promecha’ pens.
*Thread Reply:* I kind of assumed they would be silicone too, but there is some definite stickiness developing.
*Thread Reply:* FWIW, Zebra sells replacement parts for the tip and rings…
https://www.zebraservice.jp/products/list.php?category_id=133
I think the Script rules! Only drawback is the plastic clutch, but I will never use these pencils enough to reach the point where their usable life might be threatened.
I certainly know what you mean; perhaps I've been lucky with my Scripts (4 colors)
After the Japanese fans raised a stink about the plastic clutch, Rhodia quietly replaced subsequent batches with a metal one. I believe most/all of the limited colors are ‘improved’. I know my recent green is. Also saw pics of the metal clutch on the turquoise edition.
Button rattle… just get a roll of Tamiya masking tape and apply. Easy solution.
Excellent Newman starter set here: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m37587076559
I want one of these, but 7000¥ is steeeeep https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b1033755054
There are 4 or more variations in this lineup. Very ‘high-tech’ in the way Japanese hi-fi sets were designed in the late 80s-mid 90s.
*Thread Reply:* So my schwan stabilo microtom 3365 in "as new" condition is worth more than the zero dollars I paid for it? 🙂
*Thread Reply:* Easily! I'm gonna boost the Microtom 3365 soon as a must-have vintage double knock
*Thread Reply:* it's the best-of-breed of the Ohto Grip 500 variants
Lot was completely made by 4 Schwan Stabilo double knocks and the elusive Rotring Tikky black double knock (plastic version)
Anyone know anything about this side knock, like who makes it? https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/n411668305?conversionType=mypage_watch_list
The clicker and body line looks to be similar to the Yoko2
Fairly recent I think I have some info on my other machine. Will check later.

Haven't bought a Newman since October. With a couple of exceptions, they seem to have disappeared off Mercari and YAJ
Whatever this is IS amazing.....

The legendary Tombow Variable was released in 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5
oh no doubt—it's one of the most precious pieces in all of MP-dom
When it comes to the most significant flexes, I'm not sure any of us can compete with cytherean, raybonche, drifand (Kelvin), EltonSGP, or the Chinese guy currently in grad school at Arizona State
glad I'm not trying to flex in that arena.
plus i have a shitload of inventory to sell now; I'm guessing at least $6K
man, I'm glad I'm a Pentel guy. Way easier 🙂
Don't care much for Graph1000 LE, GraphGear colors, Smash colors, Kerry colors (though I do like some of these)
*Thread Reply:* I am interested in Graph 1000 if you want to get rid of them 🙂
*Thread Reply:* haha, I think I only have 3 total, all super basic colorways
so that cuts out a TON of pencils I would otherwise get
(not since I got the holy grail matte yellow and black)
Variable is right up there in MEC territory… I managed to get the 0.3 and 0.4 over 2019 thru 2021. Doing so also meant prioritising them over other targets like the Technomatic, Pilot Holder series etc.
For Pentel, I'm focusing on just a few elusive items: P300 in red, a couple more P35 Hue, maybe the US Classic Deluxe S55 and S59…
Smash is just scratching an itch for fun colors. PG1000… less so as they never do anything interesting outside of 0.5.
For Tombow, I'm still hoping to get a Monotech 1000 0.4… too many incidental slide sharps to keep track of.
Sakura… well… the Archi series is probably out of reach unless it's thru a direct sale. Last time I enquired Archi Y was benchmarked at over 750 USD.
Not a yacht I want to die on 😂
My current CDA combo, in use for the week. I'd had my eye on the Alexander Girard 849 for awhile but needed to be sure I actually liked having a pair of eyes looking back at me. I guess I'm a sucker for mid-century designers!
I saw this combo as starting with: • Black pattern on white (2mm) • White pattern on black (blue ink) • White gradient to grey (0.5mm) • Grey gradient to black (0.7mm custom) • All black (black ink)
In the box, with a hexagonal eraser from Kokuyo’s recent Enpitsu Sharp series, and a uni sharpener for the Fixpencil.
*Thread Reply:* Sweet! They definitely have the mid-mod feel! the black to grey gradient looks like it passes through purple.
*Thread Reply:* Yeah… it's not a simple ‘just black’ to grey. In design production, it is common to add cyan to black for a ‘deep black’ effect. Guess some of it is revealed in the transition.
*Thread Reply:* Oh yea. We used to get deeper black by adding CMY to black om the digital presses. Not 100% of each or the toner wold flake.
Completely insane: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/o1035733433
I was completely shocked when I saw that price. Absolutely insane.
Yea, I'm excited to win that one. Can't wait to get it in! Pumped!
Surprised to see that sort of enthusiasm for anything other than Archi
Yeah. Sakura is such an interesting brand. I'd be curious to see how much an ATS3000 would go for on YJA.
I finally found a seller for this beauty. Thought you all might enjoy.
Highly recommend this Kokuyo set: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m60656953281
Fairly certain these are Staedtler 925 25 pencils with a couple of different parts
My main college pencil, which I bought for like $7 at the Georgia Tech bookstore in 1999 or 2000: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m31375578356
*Thread Reply:* Yep! rubber grip is totally shot, and the entire front part of the pencil just spins around the internals
*Thread Reply:* I bought a Pro Touch II before I graduated and never used it (knurled grip)
America's legacy of crappy rotary pencils is a stain
I find that rotary pencils have a different charm… the analog manner of being able to twist out exactly how much lead you want and not being ‘dictated’ by preset increments is quite refreshing in use.
Some favorites include Parker 21, Dur-O-Lite and Esterbrook… and of course, UCHIDA’s Drawing Sharp D and E.
There's an Autopoint that I've always wanted but can't seem to find: a double ender with the coloured parts in CLEAR red and blue. Only ever seen it in one Japanese collector’s case.
I agree with that, at least as far as Uchida is concerned. But 90+% of the American rotary pencils have 0.9mm lead, which is a non-starter for me
A random combo of blue and clear pencils plus a ballpoint: • Gakken SAM Sharp 0.9 twist propel • YELL Pencil 2mm leadholder • Unknown German ballpoint
Does anyone know what these are?
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1173781188/zebra-noct-automatic-vintage-mechanical
AUtomatic mechanism similar to the ones you have
I think these are slightly cheaper than the nockless
Oh dang. Can't get much cheaper than those
Might be the same damn pencil with some different frills on the barrel tbh
Shocked by the final price here. Is there a sought-after pencil I'm missing? https://www.ebay.com/itm/265564342610
*Thread Reply:* What are you talking about bud - don’t you see that Bic?? 🤪
*Thread Reply:* Its the math. Yoy get a collection that includes some popular pencils for less than $3 per. It does not add up for me but I could see someone starting out to look at it differently.
*Thread Reply:* Man, those are beat up. Can see a blue aluminum Scripto, and maybe a TruPoint spring loaded leadholder… nice pencils but seriously worn.
Ok, who’s willing to risk their marriage?

What's painful is that this is for TWO. I could possibly splurge on one… but the funds to cover two is just insurmountable.
Not sure how high I’m willing to go, but I’m bidding on this now: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1041396486
*Thread Reply:* I tell you what…
It's fun watching the high rollers’ table.
*Thread Reply:* I feel like I just stole that at $335?!?
Non-Pentel Popn'Pop? I stumbled across this. It has no Pentel markings but is listed as Popn'Pop: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/j1044308959
*Thread Reply:* Just goes to show that we have no idea what pop'npop is
*Thread Reply:* I know it was a video game in Japan but nothing about any Pentel pieces really lean towards the video game
*Thread Reply:* and most of the Pop'npop stuff is plastic and fun/kiddie colors but then there's the PBS1 which at first glance is a kid's toy pencil but it's actually a damn cool piece that has a damn cool design that's for commemorating a baseball team. Then there's the PD515 Pop'npop that would have been for a more mature audience.
*Thread Reply:* Yea! What the what? I should have just ignored this corner of the universe.
*Thread Reply:* In the description, “Probably a pen case set from the Pop’npop series from the 80's to 90's.”
*Thread Reply:* 🤷♂️ My only conclusion is that Jimmy has a time machine and he traveled back to the early 80s and injected this into the timeline to just mess with us.
*Thread Reply:* It's the only explanation. Prove me wrong.
*Thread Reply:* He did all of that just to distract us enough for him to acquire that Sharplet500 Q573.
Anybody seen this pencil? What's the model number for it? I know it's a Newman drafting pencil. I've also heard it labeled as Newman 2000. Can anyone confirm?
*Thread Reply:* You probably already saw these….
http://blog.livedoor.jp/pen_parade1000/archives/1399315.html
*Thread Reply:* Let's be honest—do we know model numbers for ANY Newmans?
As far as I know, we only refer to them by their colloquial names. Super 5, stainless etched, woodgrain drafting, grid etching, etc
*Thread Reply:* I think the pencil you highlighted is notable because it's Newman's version of a hi-mecha drafting pencil. It's like a Pilot Automac and Tombow SH-1500LP had a fixed sleeve baby
*Thread Reply:* Also, I would suggest this is one of the 3 most valuable Newman pencils
Newman ¥2000 I have no idea what the model number on this one is. It is all metal. The lines are etched I think. It weighs 12g and is 132mm overall length.
*Thread Reply:* That is fine.
I don't own any Newmans.
*Thread Reply:* I don't have many but this one was calling to me. This is the way many collecting stories start...
I suspect that @Kelvin Pang (drifand) might know.
*Thread Reply:* I just started browsing the general ‘mechanical pencils’ category on auction sites. I've intentionally only searched for pentel for the last decade or so.
*Thread Reply:* This was a wise decision, not looking at non-Pentels. The more you look around the more likely you will find another manufacturer that scratches an itch you never knew you had.
*Thread Reply:* That is a fine specimen! Unfortunately I don't have any more knowledge about Newman. Only the same nomenclature we use to identify the more well known models.
*Thread Reply:* I saw a similar Newman but it had silver accents.
Staedtler and Mitsubishi double knocks. There are an interesting similarities.
*Thread Reply:* Also, any idea about the model number of the Mitsubishi?
*Thread Reply:* LOVE the Mitsubishi. I take it you won the recent auction that included this one?
*Thread Reply:* Yes, it included some Boxys with "The Real American Touch" and "Exciting for Young" pencils. This is the one I was really interested in though. All are in new condition. The good news is that I am getting close to catching up with the cataloging new pencils as they arrive.
Does anyone have information on Totu pencils? They look oh so familiar
*Thread Reply:* These are wild:
• Tips look like Platinum, but Sakura had similar tips on a few executive models • Body is a Pentel ripoff • joint is almost identical to that found on Sakura executives, original Auto (Ohto) executives, and some Tombows
*Thread Reply:* I'm not familiar with Plotter. 🧐
*Thread Reply:* https://www.plotter-japan.net/smp/
*Thread Reply:* I keep wishing they'd make one in blue… so that I can match it with Pilot H-109x :D
rOtring 600 - the very 1st version with the thin red ring… anyone? :-)
Opinions about this specimen please, I am one click away from buying it
*Thread Reply:* I have one. It's nice but unremarkable? A normal knock Jib. Gold leads inside.
*Thread Reply:* I have one, and it's a cool pencil. The flange tip is a little uncomfortable in longer writing sessions.
There's at least one other variant of this pencil with an orange barrel, see it here: https://preview.redd.it/kwtw5um575v81.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d56da30943ac161eaf62dc9a2b9431cf7a34fddb
*Thread Reply:* I do not consider either of these pencils to be worth $60. Maybe $35 if you really want to round out the collection.
But I feel you—I almost bought this exact pencil for $49.95 about 9 months ago
*Thread Reply:* Mmm ok, nice info, thanks you
Here's the most badass Kokuyo Mistral I've ever seen: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w1050064827
Desk pens and pencils tend to be extra long and elegant. Thinking of a bid… are you on this?
*Thread Reply:* No, I'm out of YAJ and Mercari for a long while
*Thread Reply:* Alright… let's see if this ends up in green envelope
*Thread Reply:* Oooh. Already 18,500… gut versus heart 🤔
*Thread Reply:* Wow, that went much higher than expected
*Thread Reply:* I think it's because of the intact sticker…
Oh boy, don’t see these too often! I doubt it stays this low, but I’m in! https://www.ebay.com/itm/304471951363?hash=item46e3f14803:g:lREAAOSwVoBicREc
*Thread Reply:* Description says ballpoint, but it’s the pencil.
*Thread Reply:* Certainly the coolest Porsche pencil I've seen
*Thread Reply:* I like following things that Heath I'd bidding on. It's great fun.
*Thread Reply:* It's like my awareness of PD stuff only began around the time of the ‘flex-cable body’ and the ‘scalloped grip’ models…
*Thread Reply:* I only recently learned of these too. Only ever knew about the current ones you mentioned and don't care for them. The Slimline is kinda neat with how it’s clip recesses when using it.
*Thread Reply:* Probably auto bids from higher max bids
*Thread Reply:* Seems it’s because the actual start time was 1:30:55:
*Thread Reply:* Your bid was weak @Heath
*Thread Reply:* Maybe a good case for how YJP works with the auto extension?
*Thread Reply:* At least everyone in has an equal chance and only limited by how much they’re willing to spend.
*Thread Reply:* I would try to find a closing price between ¥1500 and ¥2200 for this piece, which is pretty common
*Thread Reply:* You mean the pencils from the Gakken store? Well I'm not an expert, I have a single Pilot-Gakken which is a professional lead breaker.
*Thread Reply:* Gakken seems to have been a brand dealing in children’s goods: storybooks, games, toys… and stationery. I have played with some of their handheld games and also robot toys. The pencils… I had no idea about them until I started hunting on YJA.
It seems they made very basic models, 2mm lead holders called SAM Knock Long/Short… in plastic bodies. The fine lead versions are interesting, like the pseudo drafting mode above. But the finishing is a bit coarse, as is the mechanism. I like having it in my collection but it's not a great performer.
*Thread Reply:* Interesting. Well if you're looking to sell or trade, let me know. I'm trying to find this black one. The knurling is similar to the MEC 1 design.
A drawn review of the MUJI version of Pentel Multi-8 / PH158… one year apart. First drawing circa 2017, when I started my journal entries… and the revision in 2018 after I found my mojo.
*Thread Reply:* These are fun. I really like my multi-8 and surprised that I don't see more people with them.
*Thread Reply:* I think the issue is that the leads are the waxy kind to bind the color pigments. So it's not a general purpose pencil like a leadholder. The leads do leave behind a fair bit of residue so after awhile, the chambers can look a bit unsightly… probably why Pentel masked away most of it with an opaque printed design on the Multi-8.
Not sure what these are. Got them with some other pencils I was focused on. These aren't especially note worthy and obvious not worth anything but I still like them.
*Thread Reply:* They are not the autofeed ones, there is no way to buy those, I wrote to the distributor in Thailand without getting a response. I bought these because seeing the drawing of the red arrow on the box, I thought they had cushioning, like my Penac Tomo. But no, the drawing means that the sleeve is retractable (and plastic).
*Thread Reply:* That is a neat pencil! Please tell us more about the cartridge. What does it take for lead and how does it operate?
*Thread Reply:* Well, it's almost exactly the same construction as the Nr.1 ballpoint: aluminum hex barrel with brass cone and twist knob attached to black plastic screw in parts.
The main difference is the design of the cone, which is threaded to accept a screw-in Schmidt DSM 2006 style 0.7mm mechanism. Refilling is via disassembly…
Operation is twist-click. The pencil is compact and feels solid but not heavy.
The pencil specific parts can be swapped onto previous ballpoint model barrels. And if you wanted to you can fit in a Parker style BP refill, which will work with the twist knob and pencil cone, BUT the opening in the cone is a bit narrower and the BP tip will not stick out as much as the ballpoint specific cone. (see pic no 2 above).
*Thread Reply:* Thanks - I’ve never seen the Schmidt DSM 2006 style 0.7mm mechanism.
Sakura ‘leather pattern’ embossed slide sharp up on YJA
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g1053907061
*Thread Reply:* Truly gorgeous, and in my experience, leather-bound pencils are quite easy (and pleasurable) to grip
*Thread Reply:* Good luck if you're bidding :-)
*Thread Reply:* Nope. But is pretty fantastic. Are those cherry blossoms? How long is it?
After a month of nail-biting shipping limbo and back and forth emails with UPS International to get them the info they needed, I thought this was being “Returned to Sender” in Spain, but to my disbelief, my purple Faber-Castell alpha-matic actually arrived today! This one also has a retractable tip that my other alpha’s don’t, but shares the same plastic primary clutch. https://uk.wallapop.com/item/portaminas-faber-castell-alpha-741695044
So… I found these Tombow pencil rolls on Rakuma. Got the darker one initially and was surprised to find the blue one later, with a different print. Thought these would be perfect for sorting out my Tombow drafters…
*Thread Reply:* What a collection 🤩
Love the rolls, too
*Thread Reply:* To be honest i've cooled off a lot on w-knocks in general. The last time I saw a Japanese collector storing a bunch of Pilot Holders unscrewed kinda made me realise how fragile they were…
*Thread Reply:* I wonder about that. I mean, clearly, disassembled storage is a thing because people have identified weakpoints and problems
*Thread Reply:* But I half wonder if putting the thing back together to use it every now and then is actually worse for the durability
*Thread Reply:* I would think you'd want to tighten the threads as few times as possible
*Thread Reply:* Agreed. Unscrewing and reassembling wears the plastic threads out…
*Thread Reply:* There's still one in the darker navy color on Rakuma:
*Thread Reply:* Only have info on their more famous models. Like Pilot, they made tons of undocumented designs.
*Thread Reply:* What are these??
And this may be the coolest photo I've seen
*Thread Reply:* These are Righella brand pencils. A bit obscure and almost zero web presence. Based in Torino. Sometimes the listings are under ‘R.P.R. Torino’ or ‘R.P.R. Righella’…
I'd previously obtained a ballpoint with some knurled detail around the grip section. Finally found an eBay listing for this lot of 5.
*Thread Reply:* More details: 2 leadholders and 3 MPs. Didn't expect the MPs to be triangular profile bodies…
*Thread Reply:* These are from Torino, Italy :it:
*Thread Reply:* And here's the most coherent info I've managed to find out about the company:
http://web.tiscali.it/righella/storia.htm
https://jp.mercari.com/item/m62770697037
A quite fair asking price actually for all three Type E colors… along with 2 Type D and some others.
Anyone know what this is? It's a Zebra but that's all I know. It's a dual pen and mechanical pencil.
*Thread Reply:* never mind. I found it....
https://unsharpen.com/pen/zebra-sharbo-sb-s-multi-pen/
*Thread Reply:* Looks like a variant of the Sharbo X
*Thread Reply:* I generally don't care for these, but I have one very similar to this, and it might be my favorite 1+1
*Thread Reply:* I'm not really drawn to pencils like this but I'm happy to have it. It came in an auction lot where I believe I was targeting some P1075s.
*Thread Reply:* That's how I got all of mine. Kind of a fun way to acquire stuff you'd never target individually
*Thread Reply:* There is a very similar model on my desk at the moment. It does not have the gridlines but does have a threaded grip. Does yours have a .5mm pencil and a dried up ballpoint also?
But, it does not suffer from the problem I have wit h many multi-pen type devices, it is not too thick. at the top of the grip section it is a little less than 9mm.
*Thread Reply:* Yup .5mm and a dried up ballpoint
Walked thru an ancient (by local standards) stationery shop after a morning meeting at an equally old office building
*Thread Reply:* Sweet! How much did you pay? Were the prices still in 1980s dollars?
What other treasures did you leave behind?
*Thread Reply:* the pilots were 5 SGD each. The PD was 3.90 SGD. There were a couple more PDs in clear black but without eraser caps.
*Thread Reply:* That is pretty excellent. By my calculation that is a bit more than 9USD (including tax).
*Thread Reply:* Also picked up 2 tubes of film leads… for fun. If anyone has a spare Pentel For Film, let me know!
*Thread Reply:* Oh wow. I would LOVE to stumble into something like that. Finding an original PD345 for sale like that would pump me up.
These have been up on yahoo.jp for a while. I'm not sure that I really want them, but man they are weird: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/q1056695250
Same but different… drawn in 2016
Oh I really want one of these but doubt they’ll stay at that price https://www.ebay.com/itm/304566231493?hash=item46e98fe1c5:g:U~wAAOSwh85i05Lm https://www.ebay.com/itm/304566215354?hash=item46e98fa2ba:g:x6wAAOSwy0xi043s
*Thread Reply:* Your max bid should be 999
*Thread Reply:* For that kind of dough I think I’d really want to see the thing in person.
*Thread Reply:* We can find his address.
*Thread Reply:* I think @Kelvin Pang (drifand) has mentioned the seller before.
*Thread Reply:* I'm actually planning to meet Elton but haven't set a date.
*Thread Reply:* Yeah but they seem to land north of 1000
*Thread Reply:* I could take a look for you but I wouldn't know exactly what to look out for.
*Thread Reply:* That thing will be gone this Sunday. I have no doubt.
*Thread Reply:* Is it like a TK matic in PD clothes
*Thread Reply:* Will your credit card be shocked next?
*Thread Reply:* It’s just like with the Asuka… I keep going back to look at it over and over.
*Thread Reply:* We know how that ended
*Thread Reply:* And now I get to look at it all day long in person.
*Thread Reply:* Good thing you didn't take it out of its packaging
*Thread Reply:* What about your children, Heath? The children!!!
*Thread Reply:* They will when they realize they could have sold it for twice as much if daddio would have kept his sticky fingers off of it.
*Thread Reply:* I just offered him some $$ for the pair.
*Thread Reply:* He usually responds quickly.
OHTO refreshes the Super Promecha line!
*Thread Reply:* Nice! Love being able to buy contemporary pencils at stationery stores. Hopefully Kinokuniya will have these by the end of the year
Under no circumstances do I think the Archi deserves the prices it fetches https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f1060046913
The fact it's not a double knock is the first issue, but then I'm supposed to believe the grip section elevates the pencil into the holiest of holies? Hard pass
